Jun 14, 2015 5. The Promise In the same vein as yesterday, The Promise is yet ANOTHER somber, introspective, well, ballad. No hook. Just Thug pouring his heart out. With how many similar (conceptually) tracks there are in the leaks (my favorite one not even being mentioned yet), I cant help but wonder what the game plan was rolling these out. There was probably a whole marketing plan re: which songs came out when/how thug and his camp morph his public image, but welp, obviously they gotta start from scratch now...Luckily Thug is one of the most prolific artists alive and can recreate tracks of this quality literally in his sleep. This track has him reciting the names of all his kids mid verse, without missing a beat, pleading his sexuality and love for his fiancee, etc. Rather than talk more about it, Im just gonna quote my favorite parts. Jun 14, 2015 Oh yes, I'm totally wrong about my personal opinion. And I don't mind the song too much. However, it does feature one of the problems I have with Thug is that his delivery/cadence needs to fit the lyrics. I've listened to the track a few times and read some of the lyrics you posted, and not everything matches up. Sometimes you can really hear the emotion and other times you just hear Thug being Thug. He's got f---ing ADHD or something, he has a hard time focusing on something. Sometimes this works on more fun/b-----r type songs but whenever it's time to make something more emotional it doesn't really come across that way half (or more) the time. This is something I told you a month or so ago back in the RIP Game thread, emotional lyrics =/= emotional song. How you deliver these emotional lyrics are just as important as the lyrics themselves. Example: "u" by Kendrick Lamar. The song features extremely emotional lyrics and has a delivery that matches and enhances these lyrics. It has a subject and focuses on it completely. Thug just gets distracted too much for me to care. Also, the beat really does help out as it's actually pretty good. The sample in the hook is really well done too.
Jun 14, 2015 How does the emotion not match the parts where it should? The ADHD you're referring to exists and is part of what makes him a great/captivating artist, but the delivery is almost always in perfect cohesion with a particular section. Like when he's listing his kids and talking about how his sisters/elders/brothers will take care of his kids when he's not around on "The Promise," or when he's telling his fiancee he gave her his hear to put in her pocket on "Givenchy," or the "officer please save me, im so gone of this purp, i went from rapping to reggae" on "The Beast." The fact that he might not always stick to one tone for an entire song is true and valid, but Im failing to see how that takes away from anything.
Jun 14, 2015 It takes it away from me because if he's getting so distracted when trying to focus on one subject, then why should I care? The ADHD delivery works on songs that don't really hone in on an emotional subject, but more of a party track where that ADHD delivery can help improve the song. When he's talking about his kids, his fiance, and his love for them, I don't really care as unless I was reading the lyrics, I wouldn't really get that from the song. He had tons of potential but he either needs to just stick to what he's good at (making bangers/party music), or work on trying to improve his flows/delivery to match his subject matter. And g.d. man, just give it up. Do I go around the forum trying to pick fights, wait a second, I mean "debates" about Death Grips? No, because I'm a rational f---ing person who can easily get why someone wouldn't like the group and move on. I have fun debating music with people, but with you it's the worst as you rarely get where people are coming from. I think you somewhat agreeing with the ADHD analogy is the only time I've ever seen you agree with hate on Thugger, but you quickly turned it into a positive. If people don't like Young Thug, it isn't the end of the world and they're not worth trying to convert like you were a g.d. Jehovah's Witness or something. Stop knocking on my door or I'm filing a restraining order.
Jun 15, 2015 6. Drawn Down One of the leaks that seems 100% finished...and it's so god d--- good. From the mysteriously cryptic hook, that's smooth as h--- through and through, but morphs from stark clarity ("I kno how to go and get a mofuckin check, no flex, flawless and VVs all over my neck, and chest") to almost indecipherable and inexplicable understated euphoria -- if that even makes sense ("imma put a drawn down on all em," "p---- n----- you a rat, and I'm Tom," "no giraffes but thugga want nothing but neeeeck"). I'm learning a lot of what he's saying on the hook just now, while writing this and it's wild. thugs always beyond at ease when putting hits on people smh. Aside from that, the writing on this track is Afucking1: "Pull up with that K out of the coupe I like my b---- brown like a mother f---ing boot I like that a--- big like Shaq tennis shoes And I want that wig mother f--- your hairdo Control that ho, no voodoo I be Thugger Liu Kang, Ryu d--- I don’t wanna hit it again, I chew Make a n----- go brazy, cuckoo Drinking on that diesel like a pig I don’t talk to snitches, you can’t tell me nothing I think I found my new favorite b---- I’m f---ing with Travi$ Scott so you can’t sell me nothing Tell me how you feel I'll pull up and beat that p---- like the pill I got Dre Beats on a mofuckin freak I got white minks on my floor yeah I just killed a sheep" I don't even know what to highlight there: Travis Scott shoutout, drinking on that diesel like a pig," "white minks on my floor look like I killed a sheep," Liu kang ryu/shaq tennis shoes >> It's just an all round solid track that's probably somewhere in my top 15 for the leaks. Album quality material.
