Hey I'm just curious since I value your opinion as a critic, what do you think of FNL and TWU? I agree with your views on MKL tho.

If I remember correctly, back on SL he liked TWU & FNL, and was disappointed with every project he's released since.

Also lol @ Cole being a mediocre rapper.

those are probably cole's two best projects (as a rapper), but the moments where he's creative or incisive or exciting are few and far between. for someone whose focus is so squarely inward, he rarely articulates his own emotions in a compelling way. kanye gets a bad rap for being self-obsessed, but runaway, all falls down, paranoid--these are songs with full, undeniable reflects of a certain feeling. it confuses me again and again that cole can't at least do that.

Fair enough. I don't think they're disappointments, but I think it's fair to be disappointed with his albums. Truly Yours 1-3 are probably better than his first two albums.
Yeah not sure that's fair to say. His ability to paint his life stories with words and relate to people are enough to at least consider him average. (Which a lot of people do)

He is average. And that's kinda all there is to it. It's a not a big conspiracy or anything -- it's something he's proved with his last three albums.

He can "be relatable" or whatever, but that doesn't mean his writing isn't simple a lot of the times (especially on his albums)

There are a handful of songs I like on all of cole's projects (and he's a good producer), but all of his albums fail to captivate me as a whole upon repeat listens.

    Go s--- Thug's d-ck

I don't think he's average, but there's always going to be bias in my opinion of him. A lot of day 1 J. Cole fans are like this. It's hard for me to explain honestly. Maybe if I had more time to think about it I could, but right now I'm gonna accept your opinion. Queer

Well for me I don't think CWTSS or BS were better than TWU or FNL, so in that sense they were disappointments because I thought he would take it to the next level with his freshman and sophomore albums. I really liked both projects though, and just because they weren't better than the 2 mixtapes, doesn't mean they're not good, and it certainly doesn't mean that he's a mediocre rapper.

Interesting article. I actually agree that he really needs to break out of that artistic barrier he's in where his projects revolve around only him (even if it does evoke a sense of relatability in the listener).

I would like to see his next project have a broader viewpoint because we've seen him execute that well before in smaller scales.

why do you guys find cole more "relatable" than yg? (this is half rhetorical, i know what the answer is for a lot of rap fans, but i wanna hear some responses).

Well being a white college kid from Iowa it's definitely hard for me to relate to YG's lyrics. I find them incredibly interesting though. Kinda the opposite for J. Cole tbh.

Cus he paints himself as a guy with good intentions that happens to f--- up every now and then. That's essentially his whole 'image'.
It's pretty easy for people to relate to that.
Edit: Also because his message and his style in which he delivers it is very straightforward.

The only time he's managed to do that in the past few years is with Power Trip.

Like both albums, though it depends on my mood.
    Currently, I'd say MKL.

I didn't say he's mediocre. He's dope. But Cole is definitely a better rapper and actually gives things context. And for one YG doesn't even rap clearly. He always raps like there's something stuck in his throat and it doesn't bother me much but Cole is clearer as a rapper and writer.
