This is reasonable - but context into this whole situation is key; I responded to his facebook posts where he was defending this crowd as peaceful, and just "sad and angry" - as well as saying the only goal of these people was to stop the vote - as if they didn't actively try to hunt down congress.

No he didn’t snd I told grimmy boy that the ones that did that deserve whatever Justice comes to them be it death or whatever. Let them rot idc. I’m talking about there was thousands of people in the capital and a million people outside it. They did not all deserve to die by no means. Sure there’s an oddball hundred maybe that were there with intent to do harm and unless someone is actually killed then yeah arrest and judge them all. Killers be killed though. I’m not defending these people or saying what they did is right. I’m just saying people done deserve to die.

i dunno if i fully agree. i get your broader rhetorical point, but this isnt close to like breona taylor george floyd or even the death penalty/drone debates. it feels the most justified and not close.

fact is these people (maga cultists) have been way way overly indulged. they need some culpability, a reminder their rhetoric and actions occassionally have consequences. its tragic a woman lost her life, but i dont know if its raises nearly the ethical issues as u do in this particular instance.

THIS is the problem with your logic. Every single person there was trying to forcefully decide the outcome of an election they disagreed with. They were trying to do irreputable harm, both physical and metaphorical - to our democracy. Not to mention what they would have done to say, AOC if they found her (someone they specifically were chanting that they were coming for).

but you know what’s going to happen as a result of this—as biden has already signaled. we’re going to get more legalized surveillance in the name of combatting “terrorism,” more sentencing enhancements, etc. but in much the same way the patriot act was largely used to bust small-time d--- dealers, most of these people from the capitol—who i agree were potentially very dangerous!—will in time go back to being lawyers or sporting goods store owners or basement-dwelling internet trolls, and the new laws and legal/policing might will be used against community activists/union organizers/etc.

edit: i agree that clearly identifying culprits here and holding them accountable is very important but i think if that happens, it will and should be a political process, no? we need to call a spade a spade w/r/t the cruz’s and hawleys of the world

Yeah it's also the context of seeing Cody post this as I've seen him defend Boogaloo Boiz and other sketchy organizations. Clearly some sympathy for the right even if he claims to be a libertarian and vote for Jo Jorgensen. If it was some rando who I never interact with or debate and I had never seen post something sketchy, I'd probably let it pass - but I hope Cody could realize why his take is so sketchy.

hopefully your cynicism wont pan out, and the right people will be punished moving forward. there does need to be a precise conversation about security/fanning online hate speech i think. right now it feels like that pocket of the country acts without consequence. my general feeling is law enforcement has alot of the tools they need already, it just hasnt been enforced. theres a few likely theories as to why.

Gen Z is seeming increasingly susceptible too. I think millennials were raised with that online skepticism but Gen Z was raised in a fully online world. I increasingly see kids from my high school becoming hardcore alt right and/or anti-vax. and I'm not talking like anti-social weirdos. I'm talking like cheerleaders, wannabe models, football players, kids from Model UN, kids from the chess team, etc.
