Nov 9, 2018 I won't argue with you over transgenderism (my English is too poor), but if I wanted to play the devil's advocate I'd say that sex can be "quantified" biologically just like age. The difference is not that obvious. btw, real question, do you have a link to serious studies/research about transgenderism?
Nov 9, 2018 Sex isn’t the same as gender. Sex is biological. Gender is more complicated & is largely a social construct. We typically don’t say someone is a boy or girl based on their X-Y chromosomes. We say that based on how they look, act, role in society etc. A lot of academic research you have to pay for to obtain in full but a great reference on transgenderism is John Money. He was a psychologist & sexologist in the 50s/60s who was one of the earliest advocates of trans rights/gay rights. He introduced the concept of sexual identity & gender identity being different. His work in the field was so radical & ahead of its time. I mean, people still thought homosexuality was a mental illness at this time so keep that in mind. Here’s kind of an overview of one of his most acclaimed books that the NYT did a write up on in 1973. https://www.nytimes.com/1973/02/25/...d-girl-by-john-money-and-anke-a-ehrhardt.html
Nov 9, 2018 Obviously: my point was precisely that you were mistaking sex with gender when you said "Age =/= Gender ; /thread". The point the guy is trying to make is that there could be something (let's call it ''age gender'' even though that doesn't make sense) that is to age what gender is to sex. Thank you!
Nov 9, 2018 He was quite a twisted guy He was the one who reassigned the gender of a boy who had his penis accidentally destroyed in a surgery at a young age. He saw the perfect opportunity to compare nature vs. nuture in gender reassignment bc also had a twin He ended up finding out that he was biologically a boy during early teens so then changed back. Eventually ended up committing suicide. Very interesting but sad story. He was called David Reimer
Nov 9, 2018 Yes, John Money as all researchers/academics wasn’t always right. Research is often a trial & error process. The situation you’re describing I believe took place in the 60s when we obviously didn’t have the knowledge/medical technology we do today. As I said, Money was a pioneer for everything we know about sexual identity/gender identity today. I’m sure there are a lot of things he thought to be true that we later found are not true. That doesn’t make him “twisted” nor does it disqualify his work.
Nov 9, 2018 I have a degree in psychology & am doing a master’s.. Gender is a topic we study a lot—and this is a go-to case study lol we’ve had to examine this in great depth His handling of the twins & the family was quite twisted...but so were a lot of studies back then Where did I imply that this disqualifies his work? Lol
Nov 9, 2018 I never said you did, I just wanted to note that scientist/researchers/academics get s--- wrong all the time. It’s not out of the ordinary for us to look back on even some of the greatest thinkers & be like, “well, they got this wrong.” It’s pretty much the norm. Research & science is all a process. Even the stuff you get wrong is valuable because it gets you closer to the truth.
Nov 9, 2018 African football players being doing this for years to enhance their career's. It why some of them destroy u16-19 youth teams beacuse they are really in their 20s. Helps them get better contracts too.
Nov 18, 2018 Not suprised if there will be a push for this in the future Reality is becoming less and less important
