That kid for real drove 20+ miles from where he lived over state lines with an AR-15 to “defend” property that nor he or his family owned. Killed two protesters in the process. 17 year old smh...

Okay so I don't want to end up on the wrong side of the argument here. I agree with many on change being needed. Humans should be treated like humans, no race behind it. I strive for a solidarity that quite frankly I don't think we will ever see in the US. but there are two things I would love to hear an honest reasoning behind other than the masses screaming BLM.

#1. BLM is being chanted across the country and protests, riots and whatever else is going on. Question (aside from the obvious) "change is needed" answer. What is the ultimate goal? There seems to be no leader and no goals set. When will we see the change we need/want? Is it better laws, tilting the scale for African Americans, or something else? I'm not standing on one side or the other with the question itself, I'm genuinely curious what are the changes being pushed. Is it enough for these police to be charged with murder and booked? is that when it ends, or is there more?

#2. Please tell me why Jacob Blake continued to walk to his car after the officers had guns drawn on him and I assume ordered him to stop on multiple occasions? We have all heard multiple versions of the story. All versions aside, would he not have saved himself if he would have just stopped? Why continue to disobey (strong word) orders from someone holding a gun to you. I can't speak to what I would have done in that situation but god forbid he got in the car and grabbed a gun. Then the lights are out for those officers. When do they decide it has gotten to far? It's all judgement calls in the moment that are too hard for me to speculate on but I just don't understand why he didnt stop and cooperate, especially if he was there being a good citizen. Let them clear the air and then leave with your kids. Dont make the situation worse.

I'm hearing info that a tasered was tried on Blake. If I can't see police body cam footage or discharge of taser evidence of that happening, then i'm not buying the need to s---t this man 7 times in the back.

Wide spread criminal justice reform: ending the war on drugs, addressing discrepancies in sentencing in the judicial system, entirely revisioning how we think of/conduct policing, expunging low level drug-related criminal record etc.

Police are given too much responsibility in the U.S. & I think people are beginning to see that. They’re understanding that maybe armed police shouldn’t be directly dealing with homelessness, the mentally ill, traffic violations etc. Of course there are time they may need to be present during these kinds of emergencies but perhaps they shouldn’t be the first responder.

I could easily question why didn’t the 3 trained police officers present physically restrain him long before he opened his car door? Being non-compliant shouldn’t be a death sentence. If three police officers can’t detain one man without shooting him 7 times in the back, I mean really, wtf are our tax dollars going towards?

We’ve developed this mind set in the U.S. that police safety matters more than our civil liberties. That police officers have the right to use force if they feel even the slightest bit threatened. That has to stop. It’s part of the job of being a police officer to deal with tense & potentially dangerous situations. You can’t put them in this protective bubble at all times. They’re going to have to do things at times that puts their lives at risk. That means tackling a guy who is being non-compliant & could have a weapon instead of shooting him 7 times in the back & calling it a day.

Okay so I would agree wholeheartedly on criminal justice reform. There are many "traditional" police tactics that were rolled out that failed miserably.

To address the second part of this, are you on the end of backing police defunding? In that case, what you mentioned, would it not be more beneficial to give them more funding to be able to handle the situations of the homeless and mentally ill? I do agree they are under trained for those situations but instead of trying to involve more people and change everything about the approach, why not give the one person, who as you said is the first responder in most cases the training required to control a situation and get them into the right hands?

I'm not sure if you've heard of the term community policing, which has its flaws itself and is far from being the standard but it has many of the goals of what you speak about. It has been implemented into many departments around the U.S but the problem is they didn't clean sweep the people there that back the "traditional" model. If more departments and communities buy into the new police reform of community policing, we would for the first time in history, see a partnership between police and communities.

"being non-compliant shouldn't be a death sentence". While I would agree with that's statement in its extreme, why should the job the officers chose have to be? I'm not sure your education level of police situations or this topic in general so I don't mean to offend you but I could name case after case where officers tried to do what you mention and died in the process. I could also name case after case where the officers didn't get a chance to react and ended up dead in the process of a simple traffic stop.

No I don't think police should be put in a bubble and no I don't think their safety matters more than civilians but they choose to risk their lives for us who don't. They put themselves in between the compliant public and the dangerous. No all police aren't good but all people aren't good either. There are bad people out there with intentions to do bad things and I don't care if they send the police, a social worker, judge judy or a citizen into a domestic dispute, traffic violation or a situation with an unhinged mentally ill person... you are walking into a situation that you know little about and might not have the time to gather all of the facts before a lie or death situation plays out. How confident are you that you would tackle someone with a knife, gun or other weapon? How fast do you think you really have to react if that person decides their life is more important than yours? Known as the Tueller Rule, Even at a distance of 21 ft the average person can close that gap in 2 seconds. What action can you take in two seconds to prevent them from harming you?

With all that being said, like I said I have no intention of standing on the wrong side of the fight for social justice and police reform. I stand with you and we need to see significant changes But the general public is widely undereducated and want to pretend they would know exactly how to handle these situations with less training than police have received.

I think the public needs to change as much as anything else. We need to come together for better solidarity which is not being shown. Treat each other with more respect and decrease the domestic violence on all fronts. Specifically on this matter most people view you as for vs. against. You can't have any open dialogue for additional understanding on either end. I think that is a shortcoming of this movement and I hesitate to say anything other than the few recited lines of "change is needed", "BLM" or "I stand with you" in fear of being labelled against when its not that black and white.

Hes not innocent. He had a warrant for r--- and other violent crimes. The cops tried several different methods to detain him, he resisted. Then the coward went to his car to grab a knife in the same car where hes kids were, putting them in harm's way. Had he not been shot then he would of stabbed a cop and drove off with little kids. All this could of been avoided if he just followed orders.

Exactly. So many black people are waking up though and are sick of white liberals telling them they're oppressed when in reality they have the American dream if they want it. It starts with stoo voting democrat. This election is so important if Trump lose then I strongly believe America is done. Democrats are okay with them burning our flag ect.. This is not about race. It is time for Americans to pick a side though because this is probably gonna be another civil war. I've been out training the last few weeks.

It's especially obvious when white person is killed by blacks or white person (add to that innocent one that followed orders) is killed by police and there is no outrage. It makes you think.

Yes I think defunding police departments & reallocating those funds to social workers who are actually educated/trained to deal with the homeless & mentally ill is a very good idea! Police have already proven incompetent in dealing with these kinds of situations. Even police departments that do adopt some kind of social work training, it’s minuscule in comparison to the actual education/training required to be a social worker. We can’t expect police to be experts in all these various fields when their training is 6-8 months tops & some places don’t even require a college degree.

Community policing is better than nothing but these efforts are largely undercut by no accountability to police who break the law & over policing in low income communities. It’s hard to build a rapport with a community when the cop with 15 complaints is still patrolling the neighborhood or there’s police presence on every other block. Police continuously killing unarmed people of color on camera doesn’t help either.

It’s in their job description to deal with potentially dangerous situations. That’s ultimately what police are for. Unfortunately, that means some police officers will die in the line of duty. Just like American soldiers, firefighters, first responders in general. What separates police from the rest though is that we’ve developed this mindset that we ought to shield them at all costs. We try to minimize the dangers of policing so much that it leads to anxious, nervous, trigger-happy cops on the street gunning unarmed people because oh “he reached for his pocket, what if he had a gun!?” If you don’t have the nerves to deal with being put in dangerous situations & exhausting all options prior to using lethal force, this job ain’t for you.

I think there are many people on the law enforcement side of this debate that are what I call bad faith actors. Especially police unions. They refuse to acknowledge there’s even a problem. They protect cops who blatantly abuse their power. So while I would love for all of us to be able to sit down, drink coffee & hash this out, it’s just not going to get us any where. I mean look at Colin Kaepernick who simply tried to raise awareness. People totally hijacked the conversation to be about veterans; they called him unamerican, unpatriotic, he lost his job etc. we tried having a conversation, the other side didn’t care to listen. Now cities are on fire.

Missed this. How confident I am/what I would do is ultimately irrelevant because I’m not a trained police officer. These are the kind situations we expect police officers to be experts in. How to deescalate & make quick, rational, decisive decisions when need be. It’s not an easy job but that’s what should be expected.
