Dec 17, 2017 Sometimes we gotta take a step back and realize what our man has done and how great he still is. Remember in 2000 when Eminem said that before he knows it he’ll be 40 and have 2 grandkids on his lap? Or when he said Moby is too old at 36? After TES and 8 Mile I looked at Eminem as a guy who made it and accomplished everything in rap he needed to. He told us everything already. Back in the MMLP days I could never imagine Eminem ever getting old. I could never imagine him rapping past 35 or 40. When I was 15 years old, 40 felt very old. This has always been a young mans game. And yet he’s still here and rapping well. Maybe not the same as he used to but if I told you to go back in the early 00s and imagine Eminem at 45 years old, could you seriously see him rapping? Also, he may be a little older these days but for a guy that’s almost 50, could you seriously even contemplate an almost 50 year Old Eminem when you were younger? Imagine if Kobe was playing at 45... just saying.
Dec 17, 2017 I never thought about a rapper aging & still into hip hop or doing what he is doing 20 years down the road. (No matter how good he is, or how much passion he has into music).
Dec 17, 2017 "This has always been a young man's game"? All the best hiphop artists right now are over 35. The ones ruining hiphop are the younger generation. The Lil Pumps of this world and mumbling a--- rappers.
Dec 17, 2017 I don't remember hearing about Eminem until 2004 since I was really young, and even then I don't think I cared. Kendrick is 30 and very few rappers that aren't from the 90s are over 35 What are the current best hip hop artists to you lol
Dec 17, 2017 Drug ballad But when it's all said and done, I'll be forty Before I know it with a 40 on the porch tellin' stories With a bottle of Jack, two grandkids in my lap Babysitting for Hailie while Hailie's out getting smashed
Dec 17, 2017 Are you really comparing the age of a professional athlete with the one of a music artist?
Dec 17, 2017 Tbh I haven't really been up to date with hiphop for a few years, mainly because what i've heard was trash. I tried getting up to date but in the last 2,3 years all there seems to be is a bunch of mumbling rappers on s-----y generic beats with a lot of hi hats.
Dec 17, 2017 I didn't think that far into the future. In 2002, I was just enjoying TES and 8 Mile. Not worried about what he would do at 45 haha. I know in 2004 I was worried he wouldn't drop another album after Encore. If I go back I never would've expected Relapse, Recovery, or MMLP2. If I was asked this back then I could probably see a 45 year old Em dropping a project like Revival. It has a lot of vintage Em stuff on it mixed in with his new style.
Dec 17, 2017 I feel bad for you if you like the garbage that's coming out these days. The Lil Pumps or whoever has a "Lil" in their name besides Lil Wayne.
Dec 17, 2017 Retired I remember in an interview he said, if he's still rapping at age 50..please drag him off the stage.. I hope someone takes him up on that
Dec 17, 2017 I'm not tho, I just responded to the thread. And I definitely won't have any fun listening to the type of garbage you listen to.
Dec 17, 2017 I understand the point you're trying making but this is just wrong. Kendrick, J Cole, and Drake are all under 35 and they are 3 of the best doing it right now (admittedly, Drake has had a rough 12-18 months though). Having said that, there are a ton of young one hit wonders who are definitely watering down the music. That's a fact. And since it sells, it encourages other s--- rappers to make other s--- songs for their 15 minutes of fame. It'll be interesting to see which newcomers are still around in 10 years. I still can't believe that "cash me osside" chick got a record deal and is releasing popular songs that people actually listen to. I want to believe my generation would have never tolerated this garbage but I honestly can't say that. We supported a lot of wack s--- too. This is true for every generation and will be true for the next generation and future ones as well.
Dec 17, 2017 There is some really dope new s---. Lately I've been f---ing with Vince staples Big Fish Theory (this album should honestly be in the running for album of the year). Brockhampton is actually pretty dope. While not pure rap, it's more r&b, 6black's album is f---ing incredible as well as SZA's CNTRL album. Blackbear has some great r&b too. Joey Badass has some quality boom bap s--- (Pro Era in general has quality s---). The Underachievers, Russ, Flatbush Zombies and J.I.D. are really great. That's off the top of my head. If I scroll through my library I could probably find more examples. If you look for new quality music, you will find it. It's out there. There are some really dope young kids. But you probably gotta look outside this forum. But don't get it confused. My preference is definitely the older rappers. I especially loved 4:44, d---, Talib's Radio Silence (s--- is fire), Friday on Elm Street, and Big Krit's albums.
Dec 17, 2017 Although some of the stuff was bad, I don't remember it being that bad. The popular stuff 10 years ago, let's say around 2008, you had Lil Wayne, T.I. Kanye etc.. They all had dope records. But I guess you're right, they aren't all bad nowadays, i just don't listen to it as much so maybe I missed some artists.
Dec 17, 2017 Yup I hear you. I think you and I have the same feelings on this subject. I won't lie, even the newer s--- I suggested in my other post, I don't love it as much as the older rappers. They don't give me that same feeling. I'm pretty sure this is simply because I'm getting older and I can't relate as much to these new kids. Or maybe it's just not as good lol. I honestly don't know. It's hard for me to remain objective.
Dec 17, 2017 You're very welcome. Who knows, you might not even like any of these suggestions. And I wouldn't fault you. I won't lie, it took me a while to warm up to and appreciate some of these newer kids making music. They certainly aren't my go to choice by any means but i do like switching it up every now and again and listening to them.
Dec 17, 2017 If Eminem would have retired when the 8-Mile Soundtrack came out in 2003, and never made a single song or guest appearance again, today he would be the biggest legend in music history. A living enigma.
