Aug 25, 2021 I don’t outright hate it or anything but it’s never done much for me. I don’t think I’ve heard it in full in years tho so I’ll see how I feel when I listen no skips. Honestly a lot of the songs I don’t like on TES are like that. If they were 3 min it would be whatever but a lot of them are pushing 6 min so I end up skipping them cuz I don’t wanna sit thru them. Though to be fair soldier is only 4 min.
Aug 25, 2021 Why’s that? I’ve always liked relapse tho I prob downplayed it when I was younger cuz I didn’t wanna be crucified on studioleaks lol. Its major downfall is all the r--- stuff, it would be whatever if it was only one or two references cuz he’s playing a character but it’s hard for me to wanna listen to that as an adult
Aug 25, 2021 It's true about Relapse having a vision and sense of direction. And there's no denying the production is top notch. The idea was original. If only the bonus tracks and Refill were on the original cut instead of some of the weaker songs. Be Careful What You Wish For My Darling Elevator h--- Breaks Loose Music Box .. You include those on the album and remove some of the crap and it could have turned out amazing.
Aug 25, 2021 "Say What You Say" and "When the Music Stops" are definitely the weaker songs but the other 3 like you said, madness lol
Aug 25, 2021 Why do people say relapse has a vision or do you guys mean that as in it just has a theme? I always see people talk about how relapse is a concept album but when I think of concept album I think of an album were each song is pretty much linked together to make a cohesive story which relapse does not. This thread so far brings me back to last night with wreckless sure on paper and looking at the album as a whole tes is better than relapse to now BUT there's defintely music from say Kamikaze or side b that I'd rather listen to than anything on that album.
Aug 25, 2021 Yo @Donkey Kong Country I've been meaning to ask you this for the longest time so I might as well ask it now in a thread where it might be relevant... What exactly is "leaden" about the wording of this line from "Walk On Water"? I'm asking since you say you're an English major. Hopefully this thread is a right place to ask. Thanks
Aug 25, 2021 Never understood the hate for say what you say it's always been one of my favorite dre and Em collabs same with drips but that's more understandable don't like when the music stops though
Aug 25, 2021 my darling is top 10 maybe top 5 em songs honestly, what a record man elevator always gave me this false sense that it was good because of the hook but i never liked any of the verses on that s---
Aug 25, 2021 Very hard to choose but I'd probably go with solider sonically till I collapse is better but that agression and energy and lyrics of solider > Em is always trying to recreate till I collapse every album it seems and never gets close though
Aug 25, 2021 The Relapse turn around has to one of the wildest things I’ve ever seen in music opinions
Aug 25, 2021 In this context I'd think of "leaden" as meaning clunky or awkward, and both reading the lyrics and listening to the song right now I agree—that passage def feels a little awkward and I had to read it a couple times to get what he meant. It's not necessarily wrong but if I was editing something and saw that sentence I would tell them to reword it. Of course music is different than an article, but in this instance it's like he was making his ideas fit into the rhyme scheme instead of fitting the rhyme scheme around his ideas, if that makes sense?
Aug 25, 2021 when I'm talking about Relapse's vision I also mean sonically...that means not only in terms of the actual themselves but and how it was handled by one person (minus beautiful), but also the way it's mixed and mastered and how it flows from one song to the next...there's a variety of sounds/production but at the same time it all contributes to creating this dark, brooding atmosphere...and just the way Dre can make it all sound so crisp. It's technically a concept album I guess but it's really loose and I don't think it needs to be a concept album to have a vision in the first place. that's "my d-ck hit the spot tho" in smiley form
Aug 25, 2021 I get what you mean. But when people rank albums it's usually all time, not necessarily what they're feeling these days. Or maybe i'm the only one who ranks them that way? For example, Lose Yourself. There's no denying that song is a classic. I had it on repeat back in the day but do I listen to that song now? No. I haven't bumped it a single time in 10+ years. But that doesn't mean it's not a phenomenal song or that I wouldn't rank it above some new Jeezy track that i'll be bumping for a couple weeks. You should still be able to judge the writing and the piece of music as a whole and what it made you feel at the time that you heard it even if it's not something you feel like bumping these days.
