May 11, 2021 This album isn't overrated at all, like... No It's one of the most important rap albums of 2010s and people that deny this fact are hella wrong
May 11, 2021 The only argument I could see is someone saying it's not the best rap album ever made as its rated on metacritic/rym etc. but then if it isn't what is? Production, writing, subject matter, the whole era was just perfect. I guess you can say its not as relistenable as S80 but does relistenability really affect your view of albums like that? The greatest movie I've ever seen is a really hard rewatch because of how well it does what it does but I dont think that means its overrated lol
May 11, 2021 It's way too long, the concept is convoluted, and it has stupid as f--- songs like "How Much a Dollar Cost?" and corny fake 2pac interview lol. It's a good album and certainly an ambitious one—but it's one that got worse the more I listened to it rather than better. I was in love with it the first few listens but the cracks began to show pretty quickly. I respect what he was trying to do and that he flipped the script instead of catering to people who just wanted GKMC2, but there's too much going on and I think it kind of collapses under the weight of itself.
May 11, 2021 You dislike HMADC? Whats wrong with that song? Also aside from the Pac Interview do you dislike Mortal Man? The concept always seemed like he wrote it backwards- wrote the songs them tried to string them together with a concept through the letter. A step down from GKMC conceptually but besides that the album is A+. What do you mean too much going on?
May 11, 2021 TPAB is boring as f--- to me. I was so disappointed when it leaked. I came from loving S80 and GKMC and I didn't like it at all. Not a fan of d--- either, but at least I enjoy some tracks except for his voices. Love King Kunta and Alright though.
May 11, 2021 It's a cliche "and then it turns out the homeless man was jesus" type story that you'd hear in freshman level creative writing classes. I never liked Mortal Man really. Not out of any specific hatred for it, it's just not one of my favorites. You pretty much explained it. Like it weaves parts of this letter throughout, and then it turns out he's talking to 2Pac, and there's Lucy, and then also um butterflies or something, and then there's all these high-concept songs woven together by all that. I don't think the album needed all that. It's like he tried to be more explicit in explaining the concept at the end but that just ended up making it feel more convoluted to me. Either cut it all or keep the "I remember you was conflicted..." part intertwined and read the full thing at the end. Stop before 2pac and all the butterfly s--- at the end. That's why I like section.80 cuz there's an abstract concept for you to think on and figure out but the album doesn't hinge on 100% on it.
May 11, 2021 I never went to college maybe thats why I like it Fair enough, I think its a great song and outlook on being at such a high level of acclaim that nobody in rap specifically really talks about. Yeah I get that, I don't mind the butterfly concept I actually fw it and the Lucy "subplot" too but I could've done without the pac interview as well.
May 11, 2021 Honestly it's been a minute since I've listened so I should go back through the whole thing. But Wesley's theory is such a GOAT opener with the sample fading in, words from George Clinton and Dre, and bass from Thundercat. The fact that I think it's convoluted doesn't change the fact that moments like that really succeed on the album for me.
May 11, 2021 I'm just not team Kendrick anymore, will listen, but I would rather listen to Cole friday or Drake whenever he drops.
May 12, 2021 GKMC is the most enjoyable for me overall...TPAB is clearly a fantastic album, but I don’t really listen to it unless I listen in full
May 13, 2021 Kendrick stans always exaggerate the f--- out of the concepts. Remember the whole conspiracy that d--- is meant to be played backwards haha. .
