I struggle to find real scary ones nowadays. Conjuring was great. Currently I have a few movies on my laptop that I need to watch, which have great reviews

    - conjuring 2
    - starry eyes
    - it follows
    - don't breathe
    - lights out

Any of you guys seen (some of) them?

31 both crushed by critics and regular viewers I see but story looks good and from what I read in this section I agree with your view on movies a lot.

Yeah that's a great example of why you rly can't depend on either critics or casual viewers cause they hardly ever know what they're talking about. I'm not trying to say my opinion is right or better, but I feel a person with a more open mind and sensibility to film can appreciate things a lot more. It's one thing to watch movies for entertainment or write about them academically and it's another to make them yourself and actually know what goes into it all.

Basically don't listen to anyone and just watch things to form your own opinion cause you never know what could be great.

Cosign, especially that last sentence. I recently started to download more movies with 'lower' reviews which did seem good to me and I don't regret it.

opinions vary from person to person

so i'd assume you will occasionally have these seemingly 'odd' splits, but it's only really noticeable because we place such an emphasis on critics opinions vs regular people, even though neither is offering anything different.

Just like with any other kind of critic, movie critics could be influenced by all sorts of factors. I prefer scanning fan reviews on Amazon or Rotten Tomatoes. I feel like I get a better idea of the film and how people are perceiving it. Like with Hip Hop, there are a lot of s-----y critics out there.

Find some horror specific critics. Pretty niche genre. Also, don't obsess over numbers that are the result of aggregation. They're a helpful, convenient overview if you wanna peep something, but they're not explanatory in reverse. On a critical level, I'd call a lot of Friday the 13th movies laughable s---. I still enjoy them all the same. They're incidentally hilarious, tonally inconsistent, brutal, absurd, silly, etc. A beautiful trainwreck. I can point to critically valuable things like witnessing a franchise shift creative hands so often and how that transforms the material or what constitutes a "mean k---" versus an "earned k---" in the horror genre, etc, but I don't need those arguments to defend my appreciation of them. I'd rather rather watch a s-----y 80s camp slasher any day than let a universally lauded snore-teur like Alexander Sokurov put me to sleep.

Most fans don't know how to critique film. Not saying critics are perfect but they put more thought into their opinions. Of course, this is really only for film. In a medium like video games, it can be an entirely different story. It's much more balanced. There have been plenty of games in which I've played that critics have hated but I enjoyed. And the only reason I played those games was because of the user reviews. In film, that rarely happens for me, if ever.
