What's up guys, i've got a question for you. So i've been listening to a lot of Hip-Hop troughout my life, it's basically the main genre i've listened to for as long as i can remember (except when i was a kid, lol).

I started out listening to Wu-Tang, m--- & Red, NWA\Dr.Dre, LL, Big L, Biggie, Eminem etc etc. So you can say i pretty much followed mainstream/sub-mainstream hip-hop. Ever since 50 Cent came on the scene, who for me was the prime example of what Hip-Hop shouldn't be (meaningless gangsta talk). I liked the subject matter/creativity of the artists i mentioned before.

Unfortunately we live in a time where 50 is actually by far not the worst rapper on the scene. I absolutely hate Drake/Kanye and all rappers in between. I respect Lil Wayne to some point, for his wordplay/metaphors and at least he has SOME substance. Same goes for Slaughterhouse, but they lack substance. Dre's Compton is my current number one album, closely followed by Kendricks TPAB. Both are masterpieces of a totally new standard, in my opinion.

I absolutely love Kendrick Lamar, this guy is the sickest dude since Slim came on the scene and is a far superior lyricist then Slim if you ask me I don't like the soft-voiced Kendrick that was prevelant on his earlier CD's (still some sick s--- on there, though), i like the screaming Kendrick a lot more (his Untitled live performances are god-like!).

So my question is, where in Hip-Hop can i find more artists of the type i like. Lately i've been shifting my musical focus to different Genres (Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, ) because i've been so disappointed in Hip-Hop for quite a while now.

If Dre is your favorite, I'm afraid its gonna be hard to find more artists like him... or maybe the artists who write his s---?

You have great tastes.. the only thing that is missing in your music library are Young Thug and A$ap Rocky.

Barter 6, SS 1-2-3, Tha Tour, LLA & ALAP are must listen projects. Don't bother with other artists, there's a lot of wack s--- out there right now.

I'd start by not thinking like this, it's a really narrow-minded way of thinking and you'll miss out on a lot of great music.

J.cole is a decent alternative to Kanye. He's also a far better rapper.

I can understand not liking kanye west, specially after his last 2 albums, but Drake just dropped a classic. You should give him another chance if you don't want to miss out on a lot of great songs.

Imagine thinking views is classic lmao. What's with the kanye hate on this site? I'm new here. I'll promise you'll like kanye if you would give him a chance. Listen to late registration, college dropout, graduation and MBDTF I'm sure you'll think he's not wack after listening to these albums. This narrow-minded attitude of yours makes you miss out on a lot of great music.

Saw some great recommendations here. Roots was mentioned, Roots it's one of my all time favourites as well. I might go and listen to A$AP Rocky & J Cole. A$AP had this song with m--- featured that was fire as well. Just listened to that Run The Jewels, that might just be my next s--- d--- man that's some lyrical fire right there. Mick Jenkins sounds dope as well, at least these two examples here. Gonna check more of the s--- mentioned here, thanks!

Wall of text alert, in response to a couple of guys above:

The reason i hate Kanye is because he is just a f---ing mental arrogant prick. Dudes delusional as f---, not a thing he says can be taken serious. I kinda think of him like rap's Donald Trump. Sick as f--- beatmaker though, can't touch his skills as a producer.
For drake, i see him more as an R&B artist. He might have a good lyric here and there, but his singing ruins everything. He can't hold a candle to Kendrick's shadow's worst on his best day. Credit where credits due though, so i'm gonna listen to that last album for you guys.

I only like artists that take the craft seriously. Auto-tuning is a deal-breaker, unless used to make fun of people or in some new creative way. To me, any rapper should shine in one category or more between: creativity, storytelling, rhyme schemes, wordplay/metaphors, delivery and amount of soul put into their work. If they don't, i won't listen to them. I listen to G-Eazy because he has great storytelling/delivery and puts his soul into his music.
Dr.Dre isn't even a rapper, but he produces the most bad-a--- s--- ever man so i can't fault him for that s---. I won't ever listen to ghost written s---, that i know of, but you can't deny the fact that Dre is the reason those lyrics shine. It's in his notes to artists, beats, mastering, ability to stay current etc.

I write lyrics myself and have very clear vision on what lyrics should be, for me. Eminem fell of when he stopped honoring unwritten hip-hop rules. No singing, keep it to 16 bars, make sure even your worst song is lyrical fire and hold your topic throughout the entire song. You can have some creative freedom, like he did on Rap God, but there is that. Oh and if you have to record your s--- punch-in after punch-in and can't perform it live in the same way, f--- you then.

I don't consider myself elitist though, i just like a very specific type of artist and i'm slightly autistic about these rules in my head that define what Hip-Hop is to me.
