Jul 17, 2015 I know I'm in the minority, but I never loved Deja Vu. Can't stand the monotonous, emotionless Relapse voice. Production is bland. Content is outstanding though. Going Through Changes is the closest to 2002 Eminem we'll ever hear post-hiatus.
Jul 17, 2015 Going Through Changes is overated as f--- over here. It's not even the best song on Recovery. The subject matter is cool but again, we heard that many times before. The song itself ain't even close to what people make it out to be. I prefer listening to Talking To Myself anytime before Going Through Changes. @JFK it doesn't sound anything like 2002 Eminem. It sounds just like 2010 Eminem, nothing more, nothing less. To answer the thread Deja Vu
Jul 17, 2015 are you high? it's nothing we've heard... he talked about Proof's shooting (has only been IMPLIED in certain songs by saying "Proof's death"), he talked about being on the hospital bed and hearing his daughter's voice... the song is pretty much entirely new. GTC is easily one of if not the best song on Recovery
Jul 17, 2015 to answer OP, I love both of them a lot, but I'm probably gonna have to go with Deja Vu. It was the first time he talked about his addiction in a song and how he plummeted. He brought us to his place in life with that song
Jul 17, 2015 Maybe, but I don't think it's that enjoyable to listen to. Don't get me wrong, it's a great song but nothing special to me. Even Deja Vu is quite overated imo. One of his best post hiatus songs, but it wouldn't get nearly as much attention if it was a song he made during his prime. Great storytelling though.
Jul 17, 2015 I like the chorus on Deja Vu better, but Going Thru Changes is a better song, and felt more like what I expected. I will give Deja Vu points for opening up about his addictions, but I feel the quality of the song as a whole felt stronger due to the content it was surrounded by on the rest of the album. However every verse on Going Thru Changes hits harder in comparison, where I really only felt the third verse of Deja Vu. I'm not trying to take anything away from the song, I just felt it wasn't as strong, although I loved it at first. Each song has powerful lyrics "There's an excuse, you lose Proof so you use/ There's new rules, it's cool if it's helping you to get through/ It's 12 noon, ain't no harm in self inducin' a snooze/ What else is new? f--- it, what would Elvis do in your shoes?" "I lock myself, in the bed room, bath room, nappin' at noon/ yeah Dad's in a bad mood, he's always snappin' at you/ Marshall, what happened that you can't stop with these pills/ And you've fallen off with your skills, and your own fans are laughin' at you" He seems more self aware, he puts all of himself out in that song, touches on everything we wondered about.. The drugs, his battle with depression, the decline of his lyrical abilities and whether or not he personally acknowledged it...
Jul 17, 2015 If you're going to knock him for repeating subject matter, why stop at GTC? It's a great song and absolutely the best on Recovery. His flow is effortless and the song has great content. However, I'm going to have to go with Deja Vu. The hook is great, and the 3rd verse is his best post hiatus IMO. He takes you into what his life was like at the time, and he makes it sound so d--- easy. That's always been one of his best traits as a rapper. When he's able to combine both, we almost always get great music from him. Both are great songs, but Deja Vu gets my vote.
Jul 17, 2015 No one said it was, although it is a contender We only heard glimpses in Deja Vu. Like @rapmusik said, Proof's shooting, hospital bed, etc. We also get a brief apology to Kim. He hasn't really mentioned this subject since either. I prefer Talkin' 2 Myself's content as well. Eminem's thoughts on rap during his hiatus was something I was really looking forward to hearing about. Going Through Changes could fit anywhere on The Eminem Show. The entire album was personal and heavy on family/fame/emotions. You can't tell me it doesn't have a Say Goodbye To Hollywood / Sing For The Moment vibe, something he hasn't achieved since.
Jul 17, 2015 Deja Vu is the only post hiatus song that you can put up against his classic s--- I do love GTC though, its simple but good. The content, the bridge and his flow is so smooth. You can feel the emotion without the Recovery era shouting and the instrumental fits perfectly
Jul 17, 2015 both are 10/10, and both are the best songs on their respective albums. but Deja Vu has by far the better hook
Jul 18, 2015 Love both of them, but my vote is for Going Through Changes. Reason for it is because sadly could relate when it was released, so it's more personal.
Jul 18, 2015 You hit the nail on the head here. Exactly how I feel about Going Through Changes. He literally addresses every issue in his life in that song. He even speaks about his relationship with Kim for the first time in years. "I know it feels like we just pissed away our history and just today, I looked at your picture, almost if to say I miss you self consciously, wish it didn't end this way, but I just had to get away, don't know why, I don't know what else to say." Flawless, beautiful song.
Jul 18, 2015 Totally agree. I'm not a fan of Deja Vu either. The songs heart is in the right place, but that chorus lulls me to sleep and the verses are very bland as well. Going Through Changes is an Eminem Show-quality track.
