Aug 17, 202010/10 verse. Peak Eminem for sure.
His voice and flow was so distinctive around MMLP/Devils Night. He sounded awesome. Although it matured and sounded decent on Eminem Show (my fav album) he lost that rawness that made him stand out so much, vocally anyway. Then a year later the drugged out, gangsta voice appeared, and from 2004 onwards it was completely f-----. Crazy how much he changed
I liked his simpler lines back then as well e.g "the s--- that I been through my pencil never could pencil". Much more effective lyricism, for me

from a recent interview with Mr. Porter:
“Fight Music” was a no brainer. Em always said -- he still says -- that that’s his best vocal performance ever, in his whole career. From the verse to the hook, he felt like that was his best. And I would say that’s one of my best, and one of my favorites."
Best 'vocal' is an interesting distinction, rather than 'best verse'.
...Might be accurate. Definitely is up there. Kind of a perfect tempo, perfect voice... that and 's--- Can Happen' - Devil's Night Em is beastly. Might be his best style.
Also must be pretty maddening for Em. Imagine thinking something you made 19 years ago is your best vocal performance, and you don't feel like you've topped it, after... probably... thousands of attempts since, in nearly 20 years. No wonder he's always so mad.Last edited: Aug 17, 2020dester23, IDKENGLISH, Alpha and 12 others like this.Nov 17, 2025(This ad goes away when signing up) -

I've said it before and I'll say it again
D12 was a mistake and Eminem should've just made two more solo albums instead -

I can respect that he kept his word and went back for his friends, but some of his friends shouldn't have been rappers lol. -

Yeah I think it's the clarity, the clarity in his voice. It's like loud but super clear, crisp, still smooth and so emphasized. And I think Devil's Night was the peak of that... although actually... 8 mile soundtrack.
Crazy that he made:
SSLP (1999) - MMLP (2000) - Devil's Night (2001) - TES (2002) - 8 Mile Soundtrack (holy s--- forgot it was also same year as TES)
So 5 projects of absolute f---ing gold, back to back years. That's got to be contender for the best run ever in the shortest timespan. -

Yeah D12 ruined basically every song, especially annoying as a lot of the tracks had the potential to be classic Em solo tracks
A solo album instead of Devil’s Night could’ve been Em’s magnum opus, but instead he decided to give studio times to those clownsmodli, JFK, copius inhaled farts and 2 others like this. -

'Fight Music' could very well be his best verse. Many contenders, but I certainly wouldn't argue that pick.
Sometimes I call out Em for his treatment of D12 in recent years, and while I think there is reason to, I do lose sight of just what he gave these guys in the first place. 5 randoms from Detroit were handed platinum plaques and a debut album with Eminem in his absolute prime. Because of friendship. -

Because he likes to sound different every album:
He's said that above, that if he sounds like his last album 'forget it'. It is obvious he can make his voice however he wants it - think of all the tones and changes throughout Relapse - Recovery - h--- - MMLP2 - Revial - Kam - 'Murder - he has 100 tones and he can tap into any of them... but he's not going to just do the same thing.hargydon, copius inhaled farts, ETERNAL and 1 other person like this.Nov 17, 2025(This ad goes away when signing up) -

The quality and skill level from Eminem on DN compared to the rest of them is laughable. They're worlds apart. He was really in his bag in every department so yes it was a missed opportunity of epic proportions.
