Oct 14, 2020 You're partially correct, it's not as big of a deal, since people don't have to choose (financially) between albums. They still do have to choose (timing). The real reason, in the age of surprise (or close to it) drops, is the share of publicity an album can generate. Other big albums dropping at the same time can cost you mindshare when it comes to the publicity of a surprise (or one week announcement) drop.
