Oct 9, 2020 When it comes to his hiatus em had alot of gems. If he dropped an album 2006 it would be great. unless he had encore like filler, that seemed to make people dislike encore
Oct 9, 2020 These lyrics are a prime example of rhyming just the right amount, without cramming syllables in etc. He flows so nicely & it just sounds natural. Yeah, his recent stuff is impressive but it was this that made him so good. It was so effortless. Same with Drug Ballad. Definitely a top 10 Em song
Oct 9, 2020 Here's my biggest problem with Eminem. Eminem used to have amazing content, stories, ect- it felt like he was talking to me and just so happened to be rhyming. What he was saying was so incredible you'd barely notice he was rhyming. Now he's rapping for the sake of rapping- content be d---ed. Sure you are rapping your a--- off but you're not saying anything bro. I just don't understand how he or his long time fans are able to stomach a 180 degree turn like that.
Oct 9, 2020 Exactly. It sounds so much better. You can tell that it was about what he had to say more than it was about complexity. He sounds hungry and he's telling a story a lot of people can relate to. The problem is that Em has run out of things to say. So he became obsessed with making things as lyrically intricate as possible. On a technical aspect it's impressive, but like you said, cramming so many words together affects the overall quality of the music.
Oct 9, 2020 Just deductive reasoning. He was high as a kite and I'm sure Jimmy Iovine knew that. I don't think Eminem was capable of putting together and album and if he was I don't think the label would have allowed it.
Oct 9, 2020 Didn’t you say there was an album before relapse where almost all trackS where on 80‘s rock samples? shouldn’t Be king mathers and this album from around the same time?
Oct 9, 2020 Maybe i'm too tired but Em sounds the best when he has a point to make or a specific story to tell. When you think about it, most of the songs where he sounds off beat or is just cramming as much syllables as he can are songs where he's just rapping about nothing. Which is what most of his material consists of nowadays. Either that or rehashed old topics that don't feel genuine anymore. He sounds good on songs that are genuine. Talkin To Myself, Going Through Changes etc.. A lot of the stuff on Recovery actually. That's probably why I like that album so much. It's not for everyone but you can't deny that it came from a genuine place and that he actually had something to say. I honestly can't listen to anything after Recovery. Maybe a few songs here and there but that's about it. Every album since then I don't listen to and couldn't care less if they didn't exist.
Oct 9, 2020 I think that recovery gets a bad rap because of its singles and the 2 pop features. Like, em sounds like he's trying to show what he was going through in Going through Changes, but it gets overshadowed by songs like not afraid and love the way you lie
Oct 9, 2020 The long songs that samples classic rock were from Summer 2008 so I doubt they had anything to do with "King Mathers". That's the route he was on until he linked up with Dre and Dre told him his son said "the kids want that crazy Slim Shady back." And with that Relapse was born.
Oct 9, 2020 I'd still like to hear that track he did to give me shelter. That songs been needing to be sampled forever
Oct 9, 2020 Honestly this is a perfect analysis. His songs used to be so captivating, you felt so immersed in what he was saying and how it sounded you didn't even notice how intricate and unbelievable the rhyming was (literally any song from MMLP or TES). He's lost that golden touch that made him one of the greatest. Yeah he's old and it happens, but he takes a large share of the blame for fixating on rap like a "sport" and turning into a syllable obsessed rhyme freak. He needs to make another concept album like 8 Mile Soundtrack NOT Relapse to have any chance of delivering a final classic imo
Oct 9, 2020 I agree greatly with all these aforementioned comments. Technicality is one thing but the moment anyone sacrifices the quality of good sound in favour of that, it just sounds disastrous. Not to compare or denigrate the present Em, but there are tons of rappers who could be cited as examples of brilliant technical rap(ofc MF doom, Andre 3000, etc). They have these intricate schemes which are still captivating and pleasing to listen to. But Em's never been one of these dudes. He's always the guy who had something to say and smack us in the face with, while the rhymes seemed to effortlessly come around. Some songs that just pop into my head are Renegade, Without Me, Drug Ballad and so on. Just huge chunks of writing being smoothly rapped through. These days its the opposite. Em is sitting down, saturating his raps with SyLLabLEs while rarely having something to say. Just a thing string of loosely connected verses. But when he does choose a topic, his stuff starts flowing smoothly and effortlessly again. We don't have to look further than darkness for that. Just brilliant storytelling, entrendres where they make sense and hit hard, true emotions in his voice and so on.. This is the Em I personally want. The smooth rapping, highly insightful person who spoke a lot of truth in humour. Phew, that was a rant...
Oct 9, 2020 I think one of the best things about old em was how his punchlines seemed seamless. His verse on hellbound is one oh his best verse imo. Nowadays it feels that he either forces it, or decides to have an adlib repeat it.
Oct 9, 2020 I've never seen so many consecutive posts that I agreed with in the Eminem section. Who would have thought there are people here who are capable of making smart and objective observations about his music lol Someone send this s--- to Em. We need one last classic.
Oct 9, 2020 C'mon bruv, we love Em. We ain't no simps. BTW, I feel Em doesn't have people to offer this type of criticism. And people who criticise him, he doesn't like. Idk but feels like that.
Oct 10, 2020 I still think ppl exaggerated the syllable thing. Its not like hes doing it to the point it dowsnt flow well (while he has before, majority of kamikaze til now hasnt) as far as content he still talks about the same exact things as he used to ...killing...drugs...his place in music...his critics...drama...current events. But it was okay back in the day when he went at critics for deeming him offensive, homophobic etc, but now ppl have an issue when he goes at critics. As far has his old flows that were "so effortless" that's bc they were basic flows. He wasnt that impressive in terms of flows back in the day. He also hardly had any distinct wordplay/entendres and really quotable punchlines. If he still rapped today the way he did in 03 in terms of flow/writing, he would sound extremely dated. Also idk how many ppl here really tune into battle rap but Em alot of his flow patterns, and delivery has come from the newer era of battle rap. Difference is those guys cant make a song and He figured out how to put it into song form. I get it's not for everybody, but me? I get way more into it when someone is carrying phrase rhymes and able to have quotable punchlines and still keep their content. While Em was away rap advanced in terms of writing. Wayne was one of the ones really bringing punchlines to the fore front, and guys were really doing double entendres. He had to get with it bc that's a lyrical skill set he wasnt that sharp with. He could diss and insult ppl but it never was delivered or written how punchlines and s--- were being delivered when he came back. When he first started trying to do that on recovery you can tell bc it was pretty bad IMO. If you look at the improvement of his writing from recovery to MMLP2 it's extremely impressive. Idk what ppl want him to talk about, bc his old content was personal but he still raps about alot of the same things.
Oct 10, 2020 I feel you, went through a same situation. Was at my lowest and I was working far away from home in Scotland in a warehouse and I would hide my headphones under my hoodie and whenever these lyrics came up it hit me right in the feels like you said. Definitely my favorite Eminem song ever. I am so f---ing mad that the explicit version is no longer available on Spotify and I have no idea why.
Oct 10, 2020 I also partially blame some Em fans(or even Em haters) who say things like “I miss the old Eminem” or “I miss slim shady”. What they really mean to say is that they miss his old sound. The smooth flow and production. When people say “I miss the old eminem” it gives Em the idea that people miss the crazy slim shady content instead of the “woke him who has something to say”, which is obviously false. In fact at his age it would be better for him to produce more mature content, it’s just that he uses the wrong production, etc. which makes the “woke” songs sound like s---. The problem has always been the production and delivery, but Em doesn’t even fully know that. Although of course Kami and MTBMB are good in terms of that so it seems he kinda learned.
