Nov 4, 2023 The negative reappraisal of MMLP2 is seriously strange, like the opposite of Relapse. When it first came out, and extending into the ShadyXV and Southpaw era, people said Eminem was in his second prime. What's really funny is that critically, MMLP2 is his most well-received album since TES. Higher ratings on average than Encore, Relapse, Recovery, Revival (lol), Kamikaze, MTBMB Side A and Side B. I definitely don't think it's better than all of those, but I think people considered it as such because, culturally, there was still more good will toward Em at that point, he retained more of his mystique as the man who didn't put out bad albums, at least when he wasn't about to overdose on pills. For some reason, despite not releasing an actual album, between MMLP2 and Revival, most of that good will was gone and people started wanting to dislike Em, and then after Revival, that was considered 100% permanently justified. The only criticism about MMLP2 that I think is totally justified is that the production isn't great. The "lack of cohesion" is really not that bad, Revival was what really lost the plot in that regard. I'd say MTBMB A is just as diverse in its sounds.
