I like their Best Of the Worst stuff and watch these reviews because I've grown attached to their personalities, but I don't often find their critique very insightful. Definitely better than Stuckman, Schmoes, and Jahns though Mark Kermode is the best mainstream Youtube reviewer in my opinion.

The fact that I ever downplayed the brilliance of 12 Years a Slave is a shame I will never live down. Impeccable filmmaking. So much to unpack. The emotional impact has not lessened. I'll have more to say soon I'm sure.

Loved Its Such a Beautiful Day. That's two films/two masterpieces from Hertzfeldt (for me). I'm now going to binge all his shorts.

      It’s Such a Beautiful Day 2012
      ★★★★★ Watched 27 Jan, 2016

Such candid observation and comprehensive inquiry into the bittersweet truths of existence never so potently realized as in this most sophisticated of simple elegies. An animated spiritual equal to the likes of Tarkovsky's Mirror, Malick's Tree of Life, and Sokurov's Elegy of a Voyage.

      96/100 - Masterful.

I'm still around, just haven't had much time to post anything. Glad you were a fan! I've seen and loved the same two as you, so I also have to check out Hertzfeldt's other shorts.

This also reminds me that I really need to get to Elegy of a Voyage.

I compared it to those 3 because all these films are visual poems with voiceover narration guiding us on a stream of poetic conscience about existence and the experiencing of being alive. This is my favourite kind of film.

He wants to rid himself of the burdens of social media etc. He went off facebook and everything else as well. Trying to be more in the world and away from distractions I suppose. I think Rowjay has done the same.

Some good films here. I'm interested in your views on Mountains, The Club, and Remember. Embrace of the Serpent is my Oscar pick though it won't win against Son of Saul.

      Vulgar Fractions 2011
      ★★★ Watched 01 Feb, 2016

Ice flowing downstream is captivating. Always beautiful how his technique retains contiguity and apparent fluidity when water is the subject. Attention to non-movement/time as significant as movement/time--though often mundane.

      70/100 - Good.

Rappmund's single-frame time-lapse technique doesn't suit me, the rhythm is interruptive, but those last 10 minutes!

      73/100 - Good.

      Harold and Maude 1971

Well scripted, though not particularly funny nor thoughtful, due to wearing its affectations and ends on its contrived sleeve.

      66/100 - Decent.

Brilliantly soft spoken and immensely intriguing. a wonderful debut from both Lee Kang Sheng and Tsai Ming Liang.

      The Arrival 1998
      ★★★★ Watched 28 Jan, 2016

A lamentation of a lost medium, whose physical nature and ability to tarnish but not die is testament to its resilience and immortality. Always alive, becoming, emerging, arriving anew.

      82/100 - Great.

I got to see Mountains early at NYFF...overall I was slightly underwhelmed. Its three-part structure is rather uneven in quality, with the final Australian-set, English language section being the most problematic. Generation spanning narratives often resonate strongly with me, but my reaction here was very much muted. Zhangke is still Zhangke so it does frequently work in moments, but it didn't quite come together for me as a whole.

To be honest, I probably will only have time to see one out of The Club, Remember, and Embrace the Serpent. Would you say Embrace is a must-see?

Pretty much how I felt about Mountains. I would say Embrace is a must-see, almost masterpiece, and I ranked it around 11th for the year. Remember is great, though I think I'm a little biased towards its subject matter (memory) and was more fond of its twists than some people seem to have been. The Club is very good, at times brilliant, but pretty uneven and highly divisive, pulling me in both directions of love and detest.

      True Heart Susie 1919
      ★★★★½ Watched 02 Feb, 2016

When she touches her bare ring finger! And collapses into the bushes! an emotionally powerful though simple and idealist film, only slighted by a naive, one-dimensional, cardboard male protagonist who does nothing to match the purity of spirit of his female counterpart.

      87/100 - Excellent.
