Next film is inspired by Song to Song, Punch-Drunk Love & Inherent Vice.

My only gripe is the ending and sequel s---. That's prob why Joaquin Phoenix left the picture which is a shame.

I don't think that's why Joaquin left, he had sum scheduling conflicts, im sure Joaquin would've loved to work with Shy again. I really am not a fan of that after credits ending but to me it seems like it's a toungue in cheek poke at the modern superhero movies and he's a known troll so it wouldn't be far fetched. As for an Unbreakable sequel, I think it will be dope, Unbreakable is solid and I think he'd do that world even more justice with his new form.

@Swizz its incredible, this is one of the most beautiful scenes oat

Yeah, it was just speculation. I'm sure only Joaquin knows.

Do you not feel like it cheapened the end just a little though? Like, thematically speaking the girl should've killed the beast. The whole movie is about enlightenment through suffering and plays with the horror rule of the pure survivor and what not. I get that her firing the gun at all was indicative of her transformation and textual evidence that she wasn't going to be victimized any longer, but ending on an "Inception top" moment and following that up with a pop culture reference and plug for a sequel sells it so short.

    Still a masterpiece.

Oh no, I love that she didn't k--- him and that he spared her because it adds weight to the fact that the narrative will be that she got rescued from a "monster" even though that monster is really just a broken person like she is, and she's returning to her real life in which she is trapped by a monster. The way he holds the shot on her face when she's told that her uncle has arrived to pick her up is really the essence of the film and the most gutwrenching moment.

I think that theme is already quite clear and powerful without her failing to k--- the beast. The beast isn't the broken person. It further victimizes the other personalities which also stemmed from abuse. Kevin outright asks to be shown mercy and killed before he can become the monster. With that in mind, it feels like he only survives for the sake of a sequel.

I like the shot. I don't like it not rolling credits there so it can wink and plug a sequel. Honestly would've worked better as a post credits scene.

I agree about the Beast but I still think him sparing her implies that he's a better creature than her uncle is. But yeah, can't disagree that I would've liked the film to end after that shot and not have been any post credits s---. Idk where he'll go from here tbh, but I have faith in the man.

I think sparing her is fine. I don't think putting qualifying if the beast or her uncle is worse was ever considered. We shouldn't be sympathetic for either. The only redeeming personality that conjured the beast is the child for being the object of bullying, but the other two are a child molester and a malevolent manipulator who both conspired to abduct children for sacrifice. That's why the beast should die. Because being a victim doesn't validate victimizing the innocent. Despite the warped value system they apply, neither of those girls or the psychiatrist deserved to die. Where's their justice? In this super cool sequel you should buy a ticket for!

Agreed that the Beast had a twisted mentality and that those characters didn't deserve to die but I think Shyamalan's point is a more symbolic on than a literal one. He's not saying it's okay and that his actions are justified but he's building up a case for the broken being misunderstood and seen as lesser when it could be that their experiences made them stronger and more intelligent than the average person, he's just displaying different extremes of that.

I think Split will standalone fine, the sequel will be more tied to Unbreakable, I trust that he'll do everything justice.

I don't see how killing the beast undercuts any of that?

This is kind of nitpicking compared to some of the terrible arguments I've already seen against the film. Especially the tried and true point of calling horror movies sexist and cruel to women despite them being built on female leads who endure and overcome suffering by default, often resulting in some of the most memorable strong female protagonists in cinema. Looking at you Ripley.

I mean if you think killing the Beast would've worked better, I'm not completely against it, but I personally felt the way it was handled worked pretty great because it allowed him to spare her. I think that moment allowed both of them to see themselves in each other, doesn't make the Beast a good being but they were able to recognize that they've overcome similar tribulations in life and found a common ground.

I do feel that turning "The Horde" into an antagonist for Bruce Willis in Unbreakable 2 might be problematic but you never know how he'll handle it, after all the character did come from the cutting room floor of Unbreakable and Shyamalan is in a far more advanced form now than he was when he made that, so I don't think he'll drop the ball now. I just hope it doesn't feel like a fan service film, and that he continues to do interesting things like he did with Split.

Poison (1991) is about a million times better than Carol (2015). I get Todd Haynes now.

    Basking in the glory

$270 million on a $9 million budget (prob 5 times that in marketing). Blumhouse in the palm of his hand.
