Who's grading him on a curve? I think the majority of his films are really great. I'm not one of the people who think he ever "fell off" or whatever, stuff like The Happening is amongst his best and most experimental work. Thought I was watching sum Tarkovsky when I saw that.

No hyperbole, The Happening is rly some of the worst writing and acting I've ever witnessed. Unwatchable.

That's clearly intentional tho. Even though he decided to take that route, he still managed to set an incredibly effective haunting atmosphere and incorporate profound ideas about our effect on the planet, the importance of love, etc. It's truly a spiritual experience.

Like why do ppl take themselves so seriously and can't laugh at Mark Wahlberg's ridiculous dialogue and delivery? Do you rly think that Mark just suddenly became a bad actor for that film alone or perhaps it was all done as a sort of tongue in cheek homage to old disaster films?

I get it though, late period Shyamalan isn't for everyone, that's understandable; but it's whack to act above it like there's nothing to be found in his work.

How about you explain what you found wrong with it so we can have a discussion on the merit of the film?

That feel when unique, original films like Split are overshadowed by boring rehashes like La La Land :mjsosad:

I probably fall somewhere in between on Shyamalan...Like some of his work, dislike others, admire his talent as a director but recognize some of his failings as a writer.

This piece from Adam Nayman echoes a lot of my feelings:

Good overview of his career, I disagree that Split relies on a big twist. There really isn't a twist. There's the debate of the beast's existence which is thematically necessary and pretty obvious as well as the tie in to Unbreakable which is really just an easter egg. It's definitely not "the trees did it".

"It was intentionally bad!!" really isn't a compelling argument to me, and anyway....no, I don't think it was intentionally horrible writing and acting lol. Mark Wahlberg has admitted the film was s--- in the years since. Good actors can have bad performances you know, it isn't necessarily a master plan.

My problems had nothing to do with McAvoy, who was excellent. And as @Twan mentioned above, my problems had little to do with Shyamalan the director, who is skilled at building suspense and atmosphere (Split definitely lured me in during its first 30 minutes or so). It all lies with Shyamalan the writer. This story was all over the place, and Shyamalan is as always consumed with unnecessary third-act twists. He hasn't been able to execute them for years, and they don't work here. By the time the film goes totally off the rails (around the time Fletcher shows up to help, I'd say...perhaps a bit earlier), he'd already sort of lost me with tonal inconsistencies (even moreso than The Visit, his stabs at humor feel strangely jarring) and piss-poor dialogue with cringeworthy exposition and failed attempts at wit. At that point McAvoy climbing up the walls was just insult to injury.

@Swizz i didn't say it was intentionally "bad" but it is intentionally the way it is, which you might not believe it, but actually works for some people! I think the film having that humorous aspect of the really cheesy acting and dialogue really gives some much needed balance to the overtly grim and dark undertones of the film. Having the film be a full serious take would run the risk of being too dark and depressing. I guess that's ultimately why I enjoy the Shyamalan, because he doesn't take himself to seriously and has some cheesy elements to his work, it's what makes him who he is.

Yeah, I thought the wacky bits were almost all given to McAvoy which work for such a ludicrous character, especially given how the entire thriller aspect of the film can be taken as metaphor depicting the main girl's journey to stand up to her uncle. I still disagree with the claim that this movie ever tries to deceive you or wow you with a cheap twist. If you're referring to McAvoy's transformation as the movie "going off the rails", I thought it was quite tasteful. Kind of a Victorian vibe like a millennial Jeckyll and Hyde.
