Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer “makes the absurd, amazing The Lobster seem like a warm and cuddly experience by comparison,” declares Jessica Kiang at the Playlist. “A film of clean hands, cold heart, and near-Satanic horror, it was garlanded with boos at its Cannes press screening and it is absolutely f---ing brilliant. Part of what makes its deep-freeze, suburban soul-sickness so effective is that, although the studied formalism, deterministically stiff performance style and deliberately flat line readings are instantly recognizable Lanthimosian traits, the film is set in a world that’s only a plate-glass sliver of weirdness away from our own.”

Sounds like my kind of movie.

The Beguiled is getting some positive reviews out of Cannes. Glad to see Sofia Coppola rebound from Bling Ring and that s-----y Christmas special. Sofia and Kirsten Dunst did an interview with Variety I haven't read yet. Still need to see Marie Antoinette as well.

I'd like to see Kiaraostami's latest, but I don't think I've seen enough of his earlier work to justify it. Sounds like some s--- @FilmAndWhisky is going to soak his panties over. MK2 has acquired the rights to his first 20 films and are restoring them in 4k, so at least I'll benefit from that.

Next week we're doing a Kiarostami for the film club btw :)

I'm convinced his new film is going to be a masterpiece :emoji_cry:

I'll just add that Don Siegel's adaptation of The Beguiled with Clint Eastwood is also quite good. I watched it a few months ago as prep...It's what nowadays might be known as "problematic."

I was going to watch it as well, but I think I'd rather have my introduction to the story be the one that I'm looking forward to.

I was listening to some of the Cannes press conference and Sofia made an interesting point about how after she watched the original film she was really intrigued by the story but felt that it had more potential had it been told from the female perspective rather than the male, so that's what she went and did; it's cool cause that makes this more than a remake or a retelling as it completely shifts the perspective and focus of the story.

Dude in Variety went in on it:

She has ‘feminized’ The Beguiled to the point that she has really just pummeled it into the shape of a prestige movie, one that ends with a telling tableau of the film’s female characters posed in formation, like some Civil War sorority of the newly woke. Coppola, in attempting to elevate the material, doesn’t seem to realize that The Beguiled is, and always was, a pulp psychodrama. Now it’s pulp with the juice squeezed out of it

Sounds like a pleb. You can throw all the variety writers in the trash can imo.

I tend to write people off as soon as they use "woke" unironically.

I can't say I follow many of their writers. Amy Nicholson has a cool podcast that recently had Armond White on. They also have their backlog of reviews up so you can see how films were received at their time of release. Besides that, they do tend to bend to the will of pop culture a bit too often.

You should check out Slant Magazine & Reverse Shot, they're quite easily the best publications out. Film Comment and The Ringer are pretty good to an extent too. But the bulk of them are just really bad, delusional out of touch critics who have no interesting opinions or insights.

Variety's review of Song to Song was so embarrassing that I refuse to ever give them any attention again.

I already follow Slant and Reverse Shot lol. Probably at the recommendation of people from here. Slant's RSS is spretty s-----y though since you can't limit it to just their movie reviews.
