I don't think that was his point tho lol. He's saying the film ain't horror at all but it does have a jump scare, sarcastically.

The film look like sum simp rumination on life not rly any horror.

What @Vahn said...I was just trying to let you guys know what to expect. When you see it, you'll see the only criteria it meets for a horror film is that there is a ghost in it.

All in the atmosphere, the trailer is spooky as s---. You can put it in drama/romance first, but it shouldn't be a stretch to call it horror.

Having seen it, I'd certainly argue it's a stretch to call it a horror film. Even drama doesn't seem to quite fit, as most of it isn't very dramatic, at least in any conventional sense. It's a somber, melancholic movie about the passing of time. What genre that fits in...I'm not sure.

Just got back from Dunkirk in 70 mm...Despite some reservations, I liked it quite a bit...the best Nolan film for me since at least The Dark Knight.

Calling it horror because there's a "ghost" in it just goes along with confining the genre to its iconography and tropes instead of the atmosphere and themes. I'd rather see war movies be considered horror before a simp indie.

How does saying a film can't fit into a certain genre not confine it to its tropes?

    Y'all some genre fascists

How did we get from arguing about whether this ghost movie is horror to saying anything can be any genre

I believe it began when you started an argument about a movie you haven't seen.

I just made a comment about seeing actors I like do horror. It's marketed as such, is dripping with spooky vibes, what else would I assume? Get back to me about what genre it definitively is since it apparently isn't anything, until then I'm sticking with it.

I'm just arguing for a movie to be horror based on its substance, not the fact that there's a ghost costume in the trailer lol. Twan was arguing the same from what I gather.

And I'm arguing that a film doesn't have to outwardly try to scare/repulse you to be horror. We have sub-genres for a reason.

Once you see the film, I'd be interested in seeing just how far your definition of "horror" stretches. For me though, I don't think the film even dips its toes.

I don't think it was marketed as a horror movie at all.

Would we say that Apichatpong's movies have attributes of horror because they have spirits in them and the likes?

No, I certainly do not. I don't think every film requires a superficial label nor is it always helpful to give one (Selecting a genre for something like L'Avventura would be both misleading and rather pointless). Like I said, when you see the film in question, I'd be interested in reading what genre you'd call it, cause then I could at least understand where you're coming from.

Having seen the actual film, all I'm saying is that I don't think A Ghost Story would be considered horror even under most generous definitions. Perhaps I'm being too narrow, but I'd like to see that argument based on the film and not the marketing.

If they're just superficial labels, why get caught up on it at all?

All I can do in this discussion is refer to what I have seen, I'll obv report back when it hits the net. I have nothing to bring to the table in a discussion with somebody who has seen it, just with Vahn and Charlie cuz their preconceptions hold as little weight as mine do right now.

I'm not caught up on it. I've already said I don't think A Ghost Story really fits well into any genre. For something else, assigning such a label may be helpful in conveying a general set of expectations. Based on seeing the film, my original statement was simply that A Ghost Story really isn't a horror movie to give you guys a better idea of what you're in for. That's all I was trying to say.
