Well that's the only one I needed whew.

Honestly the 40 minute cut feels incomplete so don't worry.

I was just watching Part 11 again the night before he died and was admiring him and thinking of how long he's been around and still able to channel such humanity on film. So his passing hit me hard, but he lived a full life.

I'd still really like to see how all the cuts compare. The last half hour feels somewhat detached from the rest with much of the first two acts playing like your typical IMAX nature doc. Wonder how much of that finale ended up in the 45 minute cut.

It's f---ing nuts. It was a lot of fun to watch in a packed theater, but I doubt I'll take anything else from it.

I f---ing loved Mother!. For sheer lynchian surrealism and wtf factor, it's one of the best theater experiences I've ever had. And I'm a sucker for well done religious allegory, which just put it over the top for me.

This is the biblical film Noah should've been.

I got high before going to see mother! if you're inclined to think that's a good idea.........................you're not wrong

this is Aronofsky turned up to 11. Makes Black Swan feel tame. And I'm still trying to figure out if it all works (I think probably some of it does not). But it was a h--- of an experience

tbh I'm gonna stop right there because I feel very uncomfortable talking about it without getting into spoilers

You could say I liked it :emoji_wink: we all knew that going in tho

For a while it's the same, borderline tired man vs. nature narrative that Malick and his imitators have already touched on until that last half hour where it denies itself, finding solace in the entirety of the human experience no matter our flaws.

The transitions from space to earth / earth to space often blur the line between the two, painting a Utopian perspective of Earth that's always at odds with what we're hearing; a reminder of our place in the stars and just how magical that is. The ethereal photography juxtaposed against the periodic anguish of the narration and some of the home video footage renders the film almost out of time, as if the suffering we see couldn't possibly exist in a world this perfect. Malick looks for the light in the dark and vice versa, maybe conceding that they necessitate each other after years of pondering the senselessness of it. He turns what feels like another human critique into a celebration of our capability, of the wonder that can come from it. The scenes of a little girl walking around architecture that we've seen other Malick characters feel so detached from are particularly eye-opening. The sequence with the natives (basically his Dawn of Man) is the most visually powerful thing he's ever done.

This Blanchett cut doesn't just polish off the IMAX cut, it caps off a mishmash of ideas he's been working with since The Thin Red Line. Knowing he's done with his recent style was a hard pill to swallow, but this was closure in a lot of ways. The perfect synopsis to this era of Malick's career, and a key for unlocking much of it.

Recently heard that a cinematographer who has worked with Malick and Reggio is directing his own doc that's actually produced by them. Sounds like they're really changing the game.

I can't even comprehend how photography can be this good.

Does that mean Fricke owes a cheque to Reggio and Reggio owes a cheque to Vertov?

I was gonna mention this - any comparison to the Qatsi's or Fricke's work is lazy, surface level s--- on the basis that they're "non-narrative" nature docs. It's a full on Malick film from the get go.

    edit

You're probably talking about Awaken, but since Fricke was the cinematographer for Koyaan under Reggio it still doesn't make sense

Well I'd put forward an argument if I watched any of the stuff we're talking about lol.
As somebody who can't stand Tree of Life, it should come as no surprise that I don't watch nature docs.
