Yep this is what I said briefly in Last Movie You Watched.

Blackhat has so much good stuff, but also so much silliness. In all of the shootouts there have been in cinema's history, still no one does them like Michael Mann. Likewise, no one quite captures nighttime cityscapes and people looking cool as f--- in sunglasses like Mann. Unfortunately, the script is an often preposterous mess, but more problematic is that it doesn't really deliver on the promise of its intriguing premise. Mann directs the s--- out of it though and his increasingly impressionistic action aesthetic almost overcomes the script its tethered to.

Outside of the Dracula movies, I've only seen Gone Girl and Coherence this month. I'm really slacking. Gone Girl may have been the best consistently well-acted movie I've lately. The score is eerie as f---, too. I didn't like the exposition parts but overall pretty great movie. Coherence had that Primer vibe and has more emotion to mine but it looks much more low budget than Primer. Still I'm a sucker for mindfucking movies, so this was a treat really. Anxiously waiting when the urge to rewatch will kick in.

On another note, the Winter interlude in that new Lupe record has that Under the Skin vibes and I'm loving it. Great record, I'm finally impressed my Lupe again. Off topic, sorry.

Finally saw Mommy...it was dope! At the moment, I think I still like Laurence Anyways better, but this is pretty great as well. Dolan's style certainly isn't...austere so I could understand why some critics find his style excessive, but for me, it was hard not to be caught up in the film's raw energy. Tremendous performances from Anne Dorval and Suzanne Clement as well

I agree. I know you weren't as big on Heartbeats as I am, but for someone who has been following him since day one, I feel like that's his most artistic one, which resonates so well for me. I think I prefer Laurence Anyways over Mommy because it's so lush and vibrant in style and that's what I prefer from him. There has been a refinement in his style, for sure, but there is something so beautifully distinct and I hope he never loses that in his work.

Hard to be a God is playing here in NY for a week starting tomorrow and I'm trying to mentally prep myself for it. From what I understand, it's 3 hours of blood, gore, s---, piss, vomit and farts....so I'm pretty amped.

I've seen reviews popping up in the last couple of days and I still haven't seen this. This is such a my type of film and I keep waiting for the perfect moment to watch these. Plus I'm still behind on the director's filmography, but this year I will watch this.

I would have watched her strut around in Armani outfits and a blonde wig and yell in a Brooklyn accent for hours.
We don't have to wait too long for the first reactions. Berlin starts in a week!

Here are the films on my radar for February (not too much):

February 13- Da Sweet Blood of Jesus (Spike Lee)
February 20- Wild Tales (Damian Szifron)
February 25-27- Wild Canaries (Lawrence Michael Levine), '71 (Yann Demange), Maps to the Stars (David Cronenberg)

The Dissolve recently posted their Top 50 movies of the half-decade so far with write-ups (though I think the list I posted earlier was a bit stronger)

    http://thedissolve.com/features/the...he-50-best-films-of-the-decade-so-far-part-1/

This decade so far, I've given my 10/10 rating to the following:

    The Tree of Life
    Under the Skin
    The Act of Killing
    Before Midnight
    Boyhood
    Take Shelter
    Dogtooth (if it counts)

Certified Copy, The Social Network, The Master, Holy Motors, and The Wolf of Wall Street are all really close though.
