Punch also says he can see Kendrick Lamar
entering the acting field sometime soon.
Terrence “Punch” Henderson, the President of Top Dawg Entertainment, believes Kendrick Lamar’s 2012 album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, set the bar for classic Hip Hop records of today.

During a conversation with Elliott Wilson and Brian “B.Dot” Miller on Rap Radar’s podcast, Punch says Kendrick’s album was a throwback to classic albums of yesteryear.

“I think [Kendrick Lamar] really, really raised the bar high,” Punch says regarding good kid, m.A.A.d city. “We just playing for who [is] coming in second at this point. It’s not being biased because that’s my artist but before that album, out of all of the new guys, this album was almost a throwback to what we love about Hip Hop; the way the whole album was sewn together through a narrative to the beats to all the lyrics. Everything just linked and connected. It pretty much set the bar for classic records of today.”

Punch also spoke on To p---- A Butterfly’s closing track, “Mortal Man,” which features a back-and-forth-like conversation between Kendrick and Tupac Shakur. The quotes used where taken from a 1994 interview Tupac had done with Swedish music journalist Mats Nileskär.

“He got the [Tupac] interview overseas,” Punch said. “He played it for me before one of the shows. Just a little clip. I was like, ‘This is stupid right here. This is what’s gonna make it classic if you weave it in the proper way.'

“It was also cautious if we don’t do it right it could be really, really bad,” Punch added. “I always had it in my mind that I gotta bring it back up at the right time. [Kendrick] went through recording the album—and recording the album [some more]—and I would lean in every so often like, ‘What you think about that Pac stuff now?'”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Punch spoke on where he sees Kendrick’s career going in the coming years.

“We want to continue to grow, keep moving,” he said. “I can see Kendrick acting real soon… Just look at his videos. He’s growing as a complete artists.”

Can you imagine Kendrick Lamar being in movies soon or nah?
Do you think that it'll hurt his music career or that it'll work out well?

he's right on a few different levels. not only is it the most commonly-used bar for simple quality, it's a blueprint other major and indie rappers are trying to follow. can't deny it at all.

    ever? or currently?

    On one side its like....
From his videos it appears Kendrick may be ready for the acting world. He does seem a lot more confident as a performer. His live performances are getting better as well. Like his SNL performances were much better this year. I would say Kendrick is more comfortable in front of cameras.
From his TPAB videos, He looks like he wants to have more fun, and acting will be great for that. If he's a gemini like me then he'll appreciate the challenge. Plus acting will give him time to gain some new experiences.

On the flip side I think about the fact that usually when artists cross over into acting, their music careers suffer. but 2Pac had a successful movie career and his music still sold so in that case I say go for it Kendrick...

Even if he sucks I'll still support lol and I feel like his true fans will do the same

I think I will agree that GKMC is probably a benchmark for current and future classic albums. It's such a great and timeless body of work.

As for Kendrick Lamar acting, that could be interesting I suppose. I'm not sure what kind of characters he would be good at portraying or playing though. Maybe he could surprise us.

This is very true. He is capable of many things. If he put his mind to it I'm sure he could be a great actor.

Nah I just think he's a little socially awkward. He was funny asf acting like tyler in that one video and in the "Say Wassup", could be a good supporting character :dunno
