Apr 11, 2017 We had DJ Kay Slay on our podcast this week, and it’s an incredible episode – the man was a graffiti legend at 16 and spent time as the biggest mixtape DJ in the game 20 years later…so there’s a lot of material to mine. He talks about everything: how he kept Kanye in check, got into dumb fights with Jay Z, grew up with Alpo Martinez and – had to pass this along: KAY SLAY WAS ORIGINALLY THE ONE ON THE HOOK TO ‘HEY MA’ (@ 1:22:00 or so) KAY SLAY: I remember telling Cam, “Yo, y’all gotta go back in and complete that Oh Boy song,” cause it was only a minute and change freestyle. I said, “Yo, you gotta complete that. That’s a hit, a b-----r.” He said, “Yeah, you right.” They went in and did it, that song went out the roof. Then, if y’all remember Come Home With Me, I’m on the intro of the album talking crazy. I was originally on the hook to Hey Ma…but I made ‘em take me off it. JEFF: What were you saying on there? KAY SLAY: You know that s---: “Hey ma…” My voice couldn’t do it. I said, “I sound like a f---ing b----! Cam, take me off!” He said, “No, no, no, Slay, try to relax it, say it like you talk to a b----!” I’m like, (sultry voice) “Hey ma…whassup…” I’m like, my n***a! Certain things, certain people’s voices [won’t] work! But if you look in the back of the credits, my name is still on there, cause I originally tried but couldn’t do it, man.
Apr 11, 2017 Kay Slay's tag is Dez. I've seen his pieces at the Graffiti Hall of Fame in NYC over the years. He was in the movie "Style Wars" when he was a young, skinny kid.
