Dec 1, 2017 He was huge on MTV shows like TRL in 99 and he wrote half of Dre's album. That and MMLP went Diamond + was (and still is) the fastest selling solo album of all time in 2000
Dec 1, 2017 Eminem and Nelly probably need to have some years shuffled around yeah, but I think some people in this thread are underestimating just how huge Nelly was back then.
Dec 1, 2017 Jay Z may have never been the top guy but he was in the top 5ish more than anyone else by a long shot
Dec 1, 2017 He wrote the best bits tho And let's not pretend he didn't write 100% of Forgot About Dre which is probably the song with the most longevity from that album.
Dec 1, 2017 Drake from 2011-present is absolutely right. Well 2017 is Kendrick. I agree but I think she's giving it to Em because Nelly has never been considered an MC
Dec 1, 2017 But that's not what you said. I'm not disputing this^ I'm disputing the "half" claim you made. I still agree Em ran rap in 99.
Dec 1, 2017 Drake's been a presence ever since he came up, but Kendrick and 2 Chainz features we WAY more hot than Drake's in 2012-2013. Like Jay-Z, he was always popular, but eclipsed by other artists.
Dec 1, 2017 I'd agree with you if Nelly didn't release albums the same year as Eminem. It's hard to argue that Country Grammar had a bigger impact than MMLP or that Nelly had a bigger year than Em in 2002 (TES, Lose Yourself, 8 Mile) That's not to take anything away from Nelly, the dude was huge. But he wasn't as big as Eminem
Dec 1, 2017 This seems like a list easily fact checked with album sales. Ex. Jay outsold DMX by 2 million albums in '98
Dec 1, 2017 MBDTF didn't make him the hottest though. Wayne was God still. Wayne was buzzing while being locked up. Then he passed the torch to Drake. And WTT was not even received that well by the masses outside of ham, no church, and n----s in paris at the time. Kanye didn't just randomly take Wayne's buzz like that.
Dec 1, 2017 So Drake's features on Poetic Justice and f---in problems don't exist? Lmao 2 Chainz was never that hot. Cole, Kendrick, and Rocky were all hotter from 2012-2013. U can't be the hottest dude in rap but struggle to go platinum in this era. Album sales =/= always determine what's hot in rap. And DMX had 2 number 1 albums in 98 btw.
Dec 1, 2017 Spot on Tbh Em had 2010 even though Kanye had the better album. Recovery is average but Em really reclaimed the #1 spot that year.
Dec 1, 2017 Wayne was still buzzing, but after No Ceilings the jail time that left it open for someone to take over, and Kanye blasted back from exile with Good Fridays, with Power, with Monster, with Runaway. With one of the most revered rap albums of all time. Even if I conceded that WTT wasn't that well received (I don't think that's true), songs like No Church and NIP especially were unescapable. 2011-2012 was just Rack City and NIP over and over I swear lol. Ham was also pretty poorly received when it first dropped, if I remember right. It was their botched first single and caused the album to be pushed back to some degree I think. What did Drake have in 2010? Over? I could buy Drake taking over near the end of 2011 with headlights and Take Care, but NIP was absolutely unavoidable for d--- near a year, even after Mercy dropped. I mean, Kendrick's verse on f---in' Problems is, I would argue, by far the most favored. That's the verse people stop what they're doing at a party to rap along to. Don't get me wrong, Drake was and is extremely popular since 2009, but I don't think he really reached his true potential in terms of hit making until streaming really kicked off in 2015. The streaming age is tailor made for Drake. I'm not denying his star power at all during that time, but in 2012-2013 all people talked about were 2 Chainz and Kendrick features.
Dec 1, 2017 The fact that Wayne was still buzzing in 2010, dropped albums, and still was favored over every other rapper is the reason why his run didn't end. When we mean hot, we literally mean, if you drop an album, it's gonna be the most talked about thing by the culture that year. If Wayne wasn't locked up, Kanye would still have been Kanye. Kanye didn't take over rap for one year like that and then give it back. It doesn't work like that. And I didn't say Drake ran 2010. I'm saying Wayne ran rap until 2011 and then Drake took over. And for the record, MBDTF isn't really THAT revered in rap. And it wasn't revered enough at the time to make Ye that popular. If it was, then drake wouldn't have taken over so quickly. Drake didn't make hits until 2015? You should check the year he had in 2011. He killed everything fam. I'll give you kendrick because he had GKMC but 2 chainz? Nah fam.
