Nah Fantano actually critiques music. Big Quint listens to music & dances to it lol. They’re most def in two separate lanes.

I asked this on a previous page as a general question and am legitimately curious: what do people mean when they say they want reviews to “talk about the music” more? Cuz the artist/context/history/culture is inextricably intertwined with the music upon its release. Reading a piece of art without any sort of contextual lens often makes it more of a summary than actual criticism.

Big Quint is for the casual observers of music that just want something simple and funny looking, ain't nobody trying to read lengthy dissertations that you find on P4K :jordanlaff:

Crazy thing is that Needledrop is exactly in between there but his face makes me want to punch my screen

Its pretty simple really, dont spend majority of the review talking about the artist's personal life and leave the last 1/3 or 1/4 of the review to the music. All you gotta do is NOT do that.

IGN is corrupt but one good score from one source tells me nothing anyway, I'm going to do more research and look at other reviews regardless...however if they give something a bad score it's usually accurate and in line with what other critics are scoring the game.

I can't even remember the last time I read an IGN review, I just look at the score to see if it's bad. The real in-depth video game reviewers are people like ACG and WorthABuy on YouTube.

One of the things I like about Fantano is he remains civil—you catch feelings/take things personally while discussing hip hop. When people have a debate—those involved shouldn’t get all pissy about it

Big Country does the exact same thing. Good poster and I think he provides good insight on a number of topics—not just hip hop. But he legitlmately gets pissed off in these threads

C’mon guys we’re just discussing hip hop—I didn’t attack your grandmas

you're now conflating how i act on a message board that's being taken over by stormfront goons with my actual criticism, which is an insanely stupid thing to do

"I do better criticism" yep sounds like a p4k writer "I GIVE better criticism" you neanderthal. Your head is so far up your a--- you actually believe your skewed bs. "More rooted in history" yeah let's tie a Playboi Carti album back to Rakim for the historical roots! Not everything needs a forced history lesson especially when a lot of the rappers popping today have denounced guys like Tupac or Biggie, or at worst avoid the whole discussion to not get Lil Xan'd

    wait, dude -- what?

guys, sorry, but if you're questioning whether criticism/thoughtful music writing even needs a solid appreciation of the culture, of an artists or genres history in context.... well then reading --- or thinking about music intelligently ---maybe isnt for you. there's been a few good points to be made about the role of criticism rn, but there's a lot of dumbasses just spouting off bc theyre too thick to understand the writing on the wall. and thats ok! not everyone needs to be pauline kael or lester bangs or whatever. but understand your own limitations ffs

So would you say you feel the artist’s personal life isn’t relevant to a music review? How do you set the context of a review without discussing the culture/events/etc surrounding it? Cuz re: Ye the context he set himself (the seven song albums, his mental health, the trump s---, the TMZ comments, the free thinking s---) is absolutely important to discussing the album. Even Fantano acknowledged that in his review.

Do you have an example of a review you think does a good job of sticking to discussing the music?

I promise you I’ve never been legitimately mad discussing rap on here. Frustrated or irritated from having the same conversations over and over? Yeah. but legit pissed off? Nah.

This is sad lmao music is evolving to a place where genre lines become more and more blurred but you want to trace a playboi Carti album back to Rakim roots? Ok bud
