Apr 19, 2021 I was thinking of starting with Can't Stop Won't Stop which was the first rap history book I ever read and was how I learned about about its early history initially. It's available as a physical copy, audio book, Kindle/e-reader, library (libby/overdrive as well), everything. But I agree we shouldn't necessarily exclude any book as a general rule. I actually haven't read Em's book but the only reason I wouldn't do that one (at least until down the line if we'd hypothetically done a few books already) is because part of the point of this is: A. knowledge. We collectively know a lot about eminem already lol and B. Getting people out of their comfort zone, which also sorta ties into point A.
Apr 19, 2021 Actually, this might be a better starting point because CSWS can be a little dry. The Rap Year Book teaches a solid amount of early rap history and is easily digestible because it's broken into one song per chapter. Kinda tells the story of hip-hop up through 2014. The only issue is that it isn't available as audiobook and wouldn't really make sense to listen to it (if you look inside you'll see why)—but I think this would be easy to read a few chapters a week for even if you have a busy life.
Apr 19, 2021 And this would also be fun to debate the most important song for each year against the author's choices (he aways provides a counterpick for each year written by a different person)
Apr 19, 2021 Don't get me wrong, I definitely wasn't trying to suggest we start with an Em book or that I even want to read an Em book, my point was much more general in that nothing should be excluded from the beginning. Let's just see where the journey takes us but I wouldn't want to start out by saying "we're never going to read this or that".
Apr 26, 2021 @Donkey Kong Country any further thoughts on this? In genuinely really interested to try this.
Apr 27, 2021 Also, if you or anyone in this thread wants to go ahead and buy the book, go ahead and do it now cuz we're gonna do this one:
Apr 27, 2021 Quote and/or like this post if you need a digital copy and I'll set up a group DM. (Gonna make a proper announcement for it all once I take care of some other stuff and get things set up)
Apr 27, 2021 I'll go with the digital whilst I'm deciding whether or not to buy fully.oney still right whilst I'm still not working.
Apr 27, 2021 Dope, I sent a link! As far as rap books go tho, this one is well worth getting a physical copy imo, just cuz the layout and illustrations are so clean.
Apr 27, 2021 Books are crap. Read the first and second testament instead. 59th law and hustle smarter not harder
May 3, 2021 I feel you man! No pressure—but if you haven't read this, it's a super easy and casual read. I can DM you a digital copy as well.
May 4, 2021 So are we gonna have rules for this? Like read a couple of chapters and discuss from now until a date in a week's time? Or something like that?
