after having a week to digest this mayweather vs paq fight or lack there of it had me thinking is boxing dead? I used to watch a ton of boxing in the mid 90's and it was even one of my favorite sports at the time. You had guys like Tyson, holyfield, roy jones jr,Hopkins,Tarver,Lewis,Klitchko,Toney, etc. Guys who made the sport fun to watch. Now it just seems like there aren't many guys now a days that have the appeal as the guys in the 90's had. The heavyweight division is almost non existent. It is basically Mayweather or no one nowadays. So my question is do you think boxing is dead?

Its alive and well. Just not at the forefront of mainstream culture like it once was. There are a bunch of different specific reasons for this.

Never gonna get another boxer with the popularity and hype of Mayweather and Pacquiao again.

    Natural selection.

MMA is better than box, so MMA is going to make box dissapear.

Well this month had Mayweather x Pacquaio, and Canelo x Kirkland. And then this weekend Golovkin fights and Amir Khan as well at the end of the month. I think Flacko got it right, but who knows when another fighter will break in to the mainstream.

Also there's this: "Canelo vs. Kirkland averages 2.1 million viewers in HBO's highest rated fight since 2006"

I'm not a hardcore boxing fan. I only watch big fights so from my perspective it is pretty dead as there's not really anyone I want to watch. Mayweather has been boring. The 90s I used to watch so many fights because they were exciting. Another thing that really kills the sport imo is that there's so many different belt titles for weight classes. There should only be one and if you want to move up you have to fight someone ranked higher than you. If you're #1 you have to fight #2. There should be no dodging.

MMA can be more exciting, but it's lack of a superstar makes it hard for some to get into as well. It seems when someone big wins they're at the top for a short time and then disappear

    Not really.

    Fedor Emelianenko.
    Mirko Cro Cop.
    Anderson Silva.
    Jon Jones.
    GSP.
    Ronda Rousey.

    And I can continue...

They did not disappear in a short period... Even many of them dominated the sport at their 35+

Didn't Jon Jones and Anderson Silva fail drug tests?? Ronda Rousey fights girls and no one can beat her, it's cool to watch but I wouldn't pay to watch it. GSP still fights?? Haven't really heard of the first two guys. Like I said I'm not big into the sport. From an outsiders perspective it doesn't seem like the big names hang around

Agree 100% with this. If GGG & Monroe put on a good show on Saturday it would be 3 great weekends for the sport in a row.

I was watching some old boxing on YouTube the other night... Boxing used to be f---ing sick.
I saw George Foreman boxing 10 contenders in one night all the while with Ali ringside harassing him the whole time.

Canelo x Kirkland was a dope boxe match, really entertaining. It wasnt long but it was 500x better than Mayweather x Pacqiao

Nah i dont think so. Think they are doing the right thing getting more spots on NBC, CBS, Spike TV etc. Putting on more shows on non-premium channels is the way to go and a good way to build the names of the next stars.

Just cause it was a record breaking fight due to all the build up of these two dodging each other for the last five years doesn't mean the fight necessarily was good in fact it was pretty boring and brutal to watch

Yeah, but that's not a measure of the longevity of the sport. Canelo/Kirkland last week was a great fight. GGG is going to put on a show this weekend. So are we talking about great fights or numbers? Because both still happen despite them not exactly lining up for the last fight. People aren't saying that MMA is dead, and boxing dwarfs it in numbers. Like, not even stiff competition.

Boxing is a sport that is A LOT more popular than people would assume if they aren't in the right circles. There is a reason that Mayweather always fought on Mexican holidays, often against a Mexican opponent. Think of it like soccer in the US. Not exactly accurate to gauge the popularity of something by your personal experience with it.

It just seemed like in the early 90's you had a big fight like every month. It just seemed as if it was promoted more back then. Mayweather is a huge draw obviously so is Pac but it seems like everything after middleweight is dead. I just mean as in the 90's you had all these fighters who had appeal who sold numbers. Maybe I just haven't been keeping up with it like I used to

You mean Tyson fights? Yeah, he transcended the sport. Still, people were tuning into see him smash cans. Mayweather fought decent competition by comparison.

Look at the names in the 90's Tyson,Holyfield,Lewis,Klitchko,Bernard Hopkins,James toney, Roy Jones Jr, James Toney, De La Hoya, Trinidad, all these guys had main event appeal. Now it just seems like theres a select few with main event appeal

Heavyweights attract attention from casuals. Happened in the 70s as well. The 80s were just as stacked in lighter divisions with the four horsemen (which the average person can't even name), so yeah there are peaks and valleys.
