Jan 12, 2025 It depends really. Since this thread was made back in 2014, Drake was definitely better in that time period than Eminem. Eminem was putting out dogshit like Shady XV while the next year Drake put out arguably one of his best projects with If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. Nowadays they are both pretty mid artists on average. They actually have a lot of similarities: they are both rappers turned pop stars that are extremely overrated and will never be fully accepted in hip hop. Both have had their images tarnished. Both artists seem to have no idea what direction to go in next. Drake makes way better pop music than Eminem, but Drake has never made anything on the caliber of SSLP, MMLP, and TES. So honestly you could make the argument that at this point they are pretty much equals. Although in terms of pure lyricism Eminem is way more skilled. Drake is better at singing and making bangers. Drake sells more now because he leaned way more into pop than Eminem ever did. At this point though Eminem is way more respected than Drake, but Drake is more popular. That popularity has been declining for years though and it’s only getting worse with this beef with Kendrick. I like Eminem more, but I’d rather put on a Drake song at this point. I’m barely listening to either one of them though, I have much better artists to listen to lmao
Jan 12, 2025 I disagree with the assessment that they are both rappers turned pop stars that will never be fully accepted in hiphop. Em has been fully embraced by the hip hop community for years now. Lord Jamar doesn't count lol. How many times have we seen Em receive praise from other rappers. Whether it's Nas, Kendrick, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Busta, J-Cole, Run DMC, Rakim, DMX... The list goes on and on. Any rapper worth a s--- or that has made an impact in the game has acknowledged Em at this point or even listed him as an influence. Em has always incorporated pop elements in his music dating back to SSLP. You could say Recovery and Revival may have leaned more heavily into pop but his last few albums don't strike me as any more "pop" than TES or even some of his previous work.

Jan 13, 2025 It's always a treat to see threads from 2014-15 and seeing how much things have changed in 10 years. I'd definitely argue that IYRTITL - Views Drake was better than Em at the time, but the only things he really dropped were Shady XV, Southpaw and some features, so there really isn't much competition. Now though? I honestly couldn't say.
