Nov 19, 2015 good verse for sure, drakes introspection like this feels so forced nowadays but this s--- is not a fan of the pointless asides like "women want attention so women will complain" that dont led anywhere though plus the cadence/execution makes it a bit too one note for me even tho on paper the content is clearly emotional i think a dissconnect we have is that you think how a verse reads on paper actually matters lol...not saying it doesnt but how its executed is part of how well its written. that doesnt make sense for some people....like for a lot of people it has to look technically impression and all the other s--- is just that...other s---...delivery, flow, etc. but in my opinion thats not a proper way to judge someone's skill as a rapper or writer...like a line as simple as "why would you do this to me, it hurts if it dont seems" may be something you entirely skip over on paper but hearing thug deliver it you realize that 1) f--- its clever in such a nuanced way -- teh way he speaks like f---in yoda or something lol "it hurts...if it dont seems" 2) how much god d--- emotion is behind that ONE bar "why why why why wold you do this to me...etc" so yeah, maybe on paper drakes verse looks like its the better rap verse but thug's is on another level for The Promise just look at it again...right after he names his 6 kids he acknowledges that people might look down on that...but he doesnt care..for the simple fact that he has plenty brothers and sisters, and his fiancee that will fill in when he can't. and RIGHt after that, he goes back to f---ing some random b----. it seems like chaos, but its 100% intentional. or the way he'll flip something as commonplace as "you hurt my feelings so im going to go chase money to distract me" into "why would u do this to me, it hurts if it dont seems...im gon start countin' this Knots....psyche! I think not! imma hold this weight down even tho its a lot!" its the same thing about relationships and pressure that Drake's The Calm verse is about...but done SO SO much more creatively and thats why i (and wpg and others) dont think Drake is anywhere NEAR thug as a rapper m8
Nov 20, 2015 A lil overdo, but a "only good on paper" rapper isn't what Drake is at all, which is why he shines. Thug relies much much more on his cadence and spunk on the mic compared to his actual lyrics than Drizzy, and a argument can definitely be made that he outshines Aubrey in that aspect a little. But Drake got bars, his cadence may not be suuuper original, but it's not bland and it's only gotten better over the years. His 30 for 30 freestyle is yet another bit of proof of that. But I got bigger fish to fry I'm talking bigger s--- than you and I Kids'll lose their lives, got me scared of losing mine And if I hold my tongue about it, I get crucified Wrote this s--- on a bumpy flight on a summer night Flying over Chattanooga, out here trying to spread the movement I just got me the Mercedes Pullman You n----s never heard of it, you gotta hit up Google Back in the city, s--- is getting brutal These kids'll hit your noodle then take a girl to the movies They've been dropping out on both sides We ain't in it, we just ghost ride The pen is working if you n----s need some ghost lines I thought you wanted yours like I want mine I guess you just making moves on your own time But just know it'll be January in no time And your absence is very concerning It's like you went on vacation with no plan of returning s--- is purely for sport, I need it 30 for 30 It's just not a contest lyric-wise and I'm not even sayin Drizzy is a pure lyricist. But you can't stare at the facts right in front of you and ignore it.
