exactly, its all reminiscent of old stuff but not to the point where its stale or "oh look more of the same from cole" ...

after FHD a lot of us were worried, "what is cole going to rap about now" ... but he did a good job here tackling new themes reminscent of old ones in similar ways or old themes in different ways ... i don't even know which scenario is more right lol, i guess it depends on the songs ... but you get what I'm saying haha, he advanced sonically, emotionally, lyrically but theres still so much stuff that reminds you of his old s---, and not old s--- like cold world/born sinner but rather mixtape s--- like warm up/fnl which is what everyone has been waiting for from cole since he's started dropping albums

I think this album is also a classic example of how people are split on the j cole is boring/you have to have a certain level of intelligence to listen to him meme.

It's quite easy to get turned off by the slowness and dark tone of the album and Cole definitely didn't make this album to appease most casual listeners. To actually get the value from it, you need to connect with it emotionally and get lost in the journey which most listeners aren't prepared to do and a lot of us seem to have connected with it on some level which is why we listen to most Cole music

    Fantano such an a--- clown...

he thinks that Rain is just rain... Doesn't get the bullet metaphor and he says Vile instead of Ville... like dreamville ... or Fayetteville ....

God, goes to show that first play reviews are a dime a dozen... SMH!

strong 6/light 7 is fair imo. He makes valid points. Only songs that fit the narrative are: deja vu, ville, shes mine both parts and then the closer. And we arent completely aware of the situation until the outro. He also makes a valid point that the album is criminally short in explaining the narrative. A few loose ends are there. I think he undervalues the production on this thing tho. This might be coles best produced album by a mile. im at a 7.5/8 with this album but ill never trash it cause cole actually tried something new.

even tho i look at that track as just some fun s---, the scrutiny he gives it is accurate. The album is very dense and is supposed to be from his friends point of view. But it just kinda comes outta nowhere after a song that doesnt fit the narrative which is neighbors.

i was going to put this in my major theory post but i think it might get lost in the post (especially for those who won't read it but just like it @Lebron187 haha) and its pretty key ...

and then i just hear fantano question how neighbours ties into the story at all ...

and i think i have the answer for that so here it is ...

obviously theres the part "well MFer i am" which some people theorized is the street dude saying that ...

but also its placement on the album coming after Change is crucial ...

essentially its saying even when a black person makes it out of the hood and becomes a star, they are still "a candidate for a trayvon kind of fate" ... racist people, and society as a whole will still view them as "another black person" ...

so its like why change as a person ("change from the inside" as change hook says) ... when society doesn't change with you and still reflects upon you the stereotypes which you were fighting against your whole life

so the song absolutely can be from the perspective of both stories ... cole has made it but his neighbours think he's selling dope ... which is juxtaposed by the street dude who is still in the hood and his neighbours also think he's selling dope

I think that there are multiple narratives tho... like the largest one is obvious his friend... but the parallel that is Cole's life is a narrative as well. Sure he isn't selling drugs but he deals with the same thing... stuggles to get ahead, deals with setbacks... meets a girl possible kid... and the internal dilemma of being a rapper or a father... his bars aren't prison it's fame?

or am I reaching? @2014 Forever Lives JCN lol

I agree with a lot of what he says (like Neighbors is dope doesn't really fit) but I don't view it as a completely chronological piece of work. I mean the album really starts at the end of the story (For Whom the Bell Tolls) where Cole's friend is about to die. Change is like he said a bird's eye view moment and it works as a sort of synopsis before the second half of the album. Everything works in the narrative except for Neighbors but I think Cole put that in there to give the second half a little bounce.

Couldn't Changes be like a real change like his friend tries to change so that he can be a better person but his Negibors still see him as a dealer so whats the point of changing...

JB fam... we on the same page I think.. just read your response.

na not reaching imo, id say you can 100% argue that each song can be from both perspectives ... as i will try to argue in my major theory post lol
