alright, well in that case i agree that it follows a blueprint but i still disagree that its not taking a risk

you said it yourself he took the singing 2 steps further this time, and to me thats a risk

but you're right, besides that I'm not saying cole can't advance more, he still has so much more potential to show on an album ...

at least we see a step in the right direction on each one

I've been waiting for him to put a i get up/show me something type song (still my top 2 favourite cole songs i think) on an album ever he since he started dropping albums lol ...

and i think i can finally say he has done, or at least gotten as close as he ever has to doing it with Change

word but here's the trade off. consider both this and GKMC

this is more religiously following the narrative

while GKMC was able to paint a narrative but have moments on that album too. there are songs that you can go back exclusively just to listen to (money trees, swimming pools, m.A.A.d city, poetic justice etc.)

GKMC has a narrative but is also more fleshed out as an album. just because cole sticks to his story more closely doesn't really make it better. i mean, it's almost a compromise at times like he really dumbed it down for the audience. folding clothes is the best example of that.

Immortal, Deja Vu, Change, Neighbors, 4YEO outro can all be listened to exclusively to the album although they are part of the narrative.

ye i agree, I'm not saying its better for that reason ... I'm just saying its an argument that can be had, seems as thats one of the main things kendrick got so praised for with that album was the ability to have the story concept from start to finish ...

then again he did it "first" in this era so he will always have that but still ...

and i disagree about not having songs u can go back to, at first i agreed with that notion with this album ... but i guess now that the album has grown on me it just speaks to the subjectivity of which songs i like/ and how much i like them ... i can see myself going back to nearly every song exclusively in the future, even she's mine

    word i'm down with that.

i think if he made this album 14 songs instead, with a part 1 and part 2 which is front loaded with bangers (GOMD types) that fit in the deja vu/immortal cloth, and then back loaded with slower jawns (with some miguel vocals on that b----) he could have made a better album.

he could have re-enforced story aspects, fleshed out some moments like re-visit the depression from the intro in a full song again, maybe even expressed what happened between ville mentality and she's mine i.e. how he met her.

this album is stripped down to me, that's why the quote about cole not leaving it all out there resonated with me.

if ville mentality is from "James" perspective and he says "start a new life in a foreign location" but then he dies at the end of change ...

perhaps neighbours, folding clothes, and she's mine part 2 represent the life he wasn't able to have with his girl and daughter because he died ...

he wasn't able to move to the suburbs and have his neighbours think he's selling dope, or fold clothes with his girl, or experience the joy of raising his daughter

exactly bro, 110% ... i still agree with that so much that i can't even really express ... he for sure had the songs, he for sure cut a lot of s--- so i really do wonder why he did that ...

maybe there really is something more in store ... he figured instead of doing that and going ghost for another two years h--- drop this lil tape sell a quick 500k first week and then come back with another one haha

    or so we can hope

btw i don't care about the misogynistic aspects on deja vu. that's one part of the pitchfork review i would have taken out.

Yeah. This can be said for every album "if any of those songs are giving you the same feeling as whatever as standalones" I think 4YEO and GKMC evoke different emotions and vibes, both great though.

    thats tough ...

its a shame neighbours is so stripped down when theres so many orchestra/string elements on other songs ...

even tho i like it as it is and understand why it was done, perhaps some more elements could have taken it over the top ... but i just say that because its clearly the one that everyone seems to like and maybe a couple tweaks here and there could make it stand up to money trees

she's mine perhaps vs b---- don't k--- my vibe although that can't really be argued because bdkmv pretty much became a hit lol

Word it can be said for any album because we have certain albums that set the bar in rap. Illmatic, GKMC, Blueprint etc.

But anyways that's all good, to me nothing on 4YEO as a standalone is touching BDKMV. I mean, Hov hopped on and remixed this jawn. Even though the title track on this album is prob Cole's best song to date, it's because of the writing. Not because its a good "song"

But yeah, anyways, at this point it's just subjective. If Change gives you the same feeling as Money Trees or whatever, then I'm no authority to tell you not to feel that way.

I was just saying from my own perspective.

    @Mike Tyson

do you think 4YEO (title track) stands up to if not is better than sing about me/im dying of thirst ??

yeah it's along the same lines. good comparison.

i like SAMIDOT more because he switches flow and it's less monotone but both songs cut from the same cloth for sure

The collaboration with Kendrick will bring out the best of Cole since no matter how he hides it, he's driven by the competition. I get why he goes with no features just to make the music more personal to him & us but so many tracks are screaming for an additional creative presence.
