JFK's SectionEighty App Design

    Capturing the essence of a message board on a mobile screen is insanely complicated and really hasn't been done before. Talkatalk tries, but is too bulky, slow, and most users don't use more than one Tapatalk forum. The SectionEighty App doesn't have to (and shouldn't be, at first) the full featured SectionEighty Web experience that we've come to love over the past few months. It should be a simple, modern, practical design. It should serve a purpose. Right now, that purpose should be SectionEighty "On-The-Go". The Leaks mod should be its own app. Don't overbuild.

    The main purposes of the SectionEighty App:
    • Notifications, both alerts and inbox
    • Viewing New Posts
    • Browsing individual forums
    Eventually I want the app to be many users' preference and/or only way they even visit SectionEighty. That's a lofty goal, and the only app I've seen succeed in doing so is Alien Blue, an iOS Reddit client. I actually browse Reddit the majority of the time on my phone, which is strange for a giant message board platform. I drew inspiration from Alien Blue, as well as a few other apps in this design, but maintained the SectionEighty look & feel (Warning: I use the light theme, a dark theme may be possible too).

    The main screen focuses on the feature thread, as well as giving the option for Viewing New Posts, search, settings, and the browsing the rest of the forum. This is very similar to Alien Blue's homescreen. The notification icon is the only permanent button in the top menu (the red dot means you have a new notification).

    Viewing New Posts. This is where I'm hoping users will spend the most time in the app (picture it as Reddit's frontpage). Pull down to refresh similar to Twitter.

    Viewing a Thread. I have a few different versions of this, but this is the simplest and quickest to read. Tapping on a post will show Like, Repost, Quote, Report, and View Users options.

    The dots (...) in the top menu bring up a submenu allowing you to Reply, Watch Thread, or Ignore thread. There will also be a button to Reply when you reach the end of the thread.

    Notifications are accessed from the top menu at all times. Both alerts and private conversations are contained within this screen. You can switch between them by tapping on the submenu options. Unseen notifications/threads are bold. Push notifications are included.

    Keep in mind, there is so much more to design with this app, more than I can even predict. These are still rough designs and I'm not in love with all of it. Some were even thrown together this morning.

    simple is always gorgeous. also shoutout whatever font that is you're using :allears:

    love the pull down to refresh on the new posts page.

    can you implement a different way to reply such as at the bottom of the page instead of replying from the drop down menu?

    I was planning on including a button when you get to the end of the thread, just didn't design that far yet.

    This s--- looks so nice, props. The main page would look better with just settings and search icons at the top i think. But :whew: i vote for this

    Might move a settings icon to the left of the top menu, but I wanted to emphasize the importance of Notifications at all times

    True. I like how the notifications icon stands out. Maybe keep em the way you've then but just move them down the very bottom of the page under the artists. They just seem a little out of place there.
