Dec 8, 2024 @AOTWClub Ok folks heres the album for next week Killswitch Engage - Atonement My first pick was a classic french canadian rap album, but since nobody here speaks the language I figured it wouldn’t get the appreciation it deserves. So I went with my second pick, a metalcore album. Like I mentioned, given how few people here are into metal, let alone metalcore, I’m not sure many will vibe with it. I got into metalcore late around 2018 and Killswitch Engage quickly became my go to band for the genre. Along with Trivium, they’re two bands I turn to when I’m in the mood for this kind of music. This album is easily one of my favorites from 2019. Enjoy
Dec 8, 2024 I remember watching the Nuketown video by Ski Mask and Juice WRLD then going to bed, for some reason when I was going to bed I kept thinking about how at the time we had lost so many artists recently and I was scared who would be next. A few hours later, Juice passed. Was crazy waking up to that news
Dec 8, 2024 On a less somber note, my review will be in before the end of today (It’s 2:37 AM for me so sometime in the next 22-ish hours lol)
Dec 8, 2024 Nice. I don’t know the difference between metal and metalcore, so I guess I’m about to find out
Dec 8, 2024 Yeah sometimes I feel like we can subconsciously know when someone is about to die, it’s weird. With the way Juice WRLD was it was unfortunately a self-fulfilling prophecy. He knew he was going to die soon. I’d say XXXTENTACION knew the same thing. His song “Train food” that came out after his death eerily predicted the way he died. There’s also the case of speaking things into existence which I kinda believe in and that only gets more powerful when you put it into a song.
Dec 8, 2024 @AOTWClub @Wreckless has picked Killswitch Engage- Atonement Ripperroo: 7/10 Justin Trudeau: 5/10 Michael Myers: 6/10 Yeez: 6/10 Diggledogg: 6.5/10 Stepdad: 6.5/10 Jankland: 7.5 44.5/70= 6.3 Ill Tally up the Hot Mulligan album on Wednesday night so get your reviews in before then!
Dec 8, 2024 Metal is a broad genre and metalcore is just one of it's many subgenres. Jank had a metalcore pick a couple albums ago. Two very different bands of course.
Dec 8, 2024 First listen done already lol not sure what I think really. I struggle with the genre cause it's not what I really listen too. Not a bad first listen though tbh
Dec 8, 2024 @AOTWClub Hot Mulligan- Why Would I Watch The album was neither good or bad. Definitely not my cup of tea, but as far as pop punk goes it's solid and easy on the ears. It's got the youthful, emo'ish vibe that I expect from a pop punk album. While not many songs stood out to me as favorites I did like *cough* *c--- Party 2'' *cough*. Tough one to score. As a whole it was easy to listen but nothing really stood as as really good or bad. 6.5/10
Dec 8, 2024 shiet.. Yea it's definitely an acquired and takes some listens to get used to. I have their whole discography in my library. They're really great band.
Dec 8, 2024 Metalcore is my s--- but I haven't listened to much Killswitch outside of My Curse, excited to give this one a go!
Dec 8, 2024 You might appreciate some songs, though they are quite different from BMTH so it should be interesting. This isn't considered their best work. Most fans would say it's average or sits in the middle of their discography. "Alive or Just Breathing" & "End of Heartache" are their cult classics if you find any interest in diving deeper. Great albums. The former is the All Eyez On Me of Metalcore. It's a staple and played an important role in bringing the genre to mainstream. "The Curse" is from As Daylight Dies. It's a solid album and probably the most accessible one with the most ballads. It's less aggressive than the 2 I just mentionned. The band had 2 singers throughout it's existence. Jesse Leach who co-founded the band and left early on. And you got Howard Jones, P4P one of the best vocalists ever. Both talented and equally respected. Jesse Leach is the current vocalist and came back 10 years after leaving the band One of the songs on Atonement Is special cause for the first time you have both vocalists on the same track. And it's a b-----r And that's a wrap for the long a--- history lesson of the band.
Dec 8, 2024 Appreciate that I found something that you're jank level autist on genuinely. If I end up diving deeper in definitely gonna keep those projects in mind!
Dec 9, 2024 Why Would I Watch? - Hot Mulligan REVIEW Score: 7.0 Review: Honestly, I wish I liked it more. I enjoyed the project, don't get me wrong, but I wish I enjoyed it more because I feel like I should have lol. Great vibe all around from the entire project, I was just iffy on the vocals at some points. Instrumentation was dope, energy was there, songwriting on some songs were incredible (Betty), def some track titles that are unique and stand out. Maybe I have to give it some more listens or check out more from their discog. Dec 9, 2024 Hot Mulligan - Why Would I Watch review This week’s pick sees @AOTWClub blessed by mr. Jerkland himself as he picks what is truly one of the most fun albums I’ve listened to in quite a while. Calling this project fun might go against its lyrical content and core notions of the genre it belongs to, but hey, this thing had me nodding my head along to mr. Tades’ self loathing and misery. This album runs a short yet sweet 37 minutes, it does not overstay its welcome whatsoever and even leaves you wanting more (note to self to check out the rest of the band’s discog). What grabbed me the most at first about Why Would I Watch is how colorful and punchy the instrumentals are. The music on this album is played really well and provides a great, vibrant background for Nathan Tades to do his thing. I’ll admit, my first listen to this album had me trying to adjust to Tades’ vocal signature and that ‘growl’ in his voice. I didn’t mind it but felt as if it isn’t necessary; I liked the portions where this is reduced to a minimum more. On my second and third listen, my opinion on the matter changed and his voice+scream pattern clicked for me, for the most part (a part of me needs an album full of tracks like Betty). The length and pacing of this project lead me to reject naming favorite and least favorite tracks here. As I sat with my headphones on, the project started to melt together and I took it in as this really nice amalgamation of emo and pop punk. The ‘’issue’’ I had with the album’s vocal performances went away and, as I said, clicked for me once I subconciously reminded myself that, in emo music atleast, it is not about how perfect the vocalist can hit the notes, it’s all about them feels man… the energy it has bruhbruh. I should also mention how fun the melodies here are. After my second listen I was nodding my head and singing along to it. I don’t really have any real gripes with this album to be honest. It was pretty great and a sick entry into the band’s output ( have not heard of them until mr junkland’s recommendation). I feel like these guys have a lot of potential and a lot of room to grow even further beyond this. Which reminds me, it could be my lingering autism but this album had its moments where tiny elements of shoegaze were subtly sprinkled on. I wish this was embraced even more and hope that it foreshadows the direction that Hot Mulligan will take following this release. 8/10 @jankland @Justin Trudeau
Dec 9, 2024 I think 7 is fair, a big part of it for me is that the album hit at the exact time I was in the mood for a well produced album in the genre and during a time where I could relate to a lot of the lyrics (even if not directly to the alcoholism themes and some stuff but certain lyrics and feelings in those songs I could attribute to myself) so it really bumped up my enjoyment of it. I think something that's hard to get right about pop punk and emo music now is to set the right balance of edge mixed with good production (lot of stuff now is overproduced or compressed) and actually feeling like you're speaking from genuine experience instead of the TikTok "I swear I'm really depressed and want to die isn't that cool?" a--- TikTok anthems and these guys have sincerity in droves.
Dec 9, 2024 I know my pookies better than they know themselves. I'm honestly surprised @Wreckless and @Michael Myers didn't rate it lower. @Justin Trudeau kinda felt like a coin toss on whether he'd like it or not but I'm happy it all veered towards positivity!
