When I saw the resignation headline, my first thought immediately S80 User Justin Trudeau instead of the actual former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Would be a downright travesty if the ex canadian prime minister decided to quit @AOTWClub too after his resignation from politics.

    Silver Jews - American Water
"Boy You Look Like Someone I Used To Know"
Oh boy. Just to let the cat out of the bag early, I love this album. I've loved it since I heard it for the first time nearly a year and a half ago. "Buckingham Rabbit" was actually one of, if not the last song I listened to in 2023. I'm not sure if any of y'all experience this as well, but there are certain records that I listen to during a period of my life, and they become near inseparable from said time in my memory from that point forward. This applies to a lot of albums (including my former picks in this club) and American Water is no exception

I think that one of AW's biggest strengths is it's simplicity. The instrumentation feels very laid back and i honestly feel very relaxed when listening to it. It kinda reminds me of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot when it comes to the mood that they put me in. Weird comparison, I know. Of course there's also a Pavement-esque feeling throughout it, which isn't a surprise considering that Stephen Malkmus is literally a member of both Pavement and SW. I think the best example of how great the instrumentation is would be Night Society. Considering the fact that it has no vocals throughout, the listener gets to fully take in how the instruments sound by themselves.

Then there's the lyrics. I have to admit that I was already aware of David Berman's suicide prior to listening to this record, The reason that I mention this is that I think that this knowledge might make me look at this record a bit differently than I would if I went into it completely blind. It's kind of like how the experience of listening to David Bowie's Blackstar after his death paints the album in a different light. As such, the album's lyrics give me a very melancholic vibe. There are some really killer lines on this record (The entirety of Random Rules basically lives in my memory rent free), but I can't help being a bit sad when listening to it. Berman's voice also works perfectly for the vibe that this record is going for. It's simple, but it's filled with so much emotion.

So yeah, I love this record. I've already listened to Berman's last album Purple Mountains, but I might finally check out The Natural Bridge after having it saved on my library for nearly 2 years. Big thanks to @stepdad enjoyer for the pick and yeah.

    Silver Jews - American Water

It’s always a bit challenging to review music outside of my usual preference but I try to submit a review for every album. Unfortunately, this one didn’t quite resonate with me. The sound leans into ‘’old man’’ country which isn’t really my style. There were brief moments that reminded me of Alice in Chains but those lasted a few seconds. Overall, I enjoyed the first few tracks but as the album progressed I lost interest. Still, I appreciate the pick and it's nice to see some variety.

    6/10

Been listening to The Natural Bridge for the last month or so, knew about that album for years but only checked it out like 2 years ago. It is crazy how great the whole project is when you also take into consideration that that CD is what led to American Water.

The album is not as accessible because it relies on slower songs with heavier focus on lyricism, but if you’re into that kinde of thing then you will most certainly appreciate how poetic it is. I’d even go as far as saying that The Natural Bridge has better written songs than American Water does but it is hard to compare such great two albums that I both enjoy so much and think of as 10/10.

The Wilco comparison is cool as h--- too because YHF is a genuinely amazing album. It achieves a really similar vibe as Berman’s music does for me. Some real great songs on that project.

It is so sad we never got any more music from Berman, though. He had a specific niche to his music that is getting rarer and rarer.

Spotify made me switch a couple songs that were missing. The cohesiveness makes no sense, but hopefully you enjoy the song selection!

The Lecrae pick has me intrigued. I don’t really listen to him, but I saw him live in concert before he really blew up. I also respect how he supported Kendrick Lamar in the battle against Drake with a remix of Watch The Party Die. This should be interesting.
