Jun 1, 2025 at 10:16 PM Funniest possible timeline to allow me to listen to a Big Boi album before I ever actually sit through an Outkast album
Jun 2, 2025 at 4:58 PM Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty (Why is the bold option still f----- lmao) Whenever people talk about Big Boi, many people automatically start making comparisons. This is the case with many rap duos, whether it be Clipse, UGK, and so on, but with a duo as iconic as OutKast, it's no surprise that people are gonna be discussing this topic. While many people in the mainstream focus mainly on Andre's contributions, it's undeniable that Big Boi holds his own on almost every single track. I'd even say that he outdoes Andre on albums like Southernplayallisticcadillacmuzik and some parts of Aquemini. A distinct feature that makes Big Boi special, is his coolness. Every sentence that he spits is just oozing with coolness man. And even though it's advertised as half of a duo effort, Speakerboxxx is essentially Big Boi's debut, and it pairs up pretty nicely with the previous duo records. But the fact is, that Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty was released in 2010, 7 years after Speakerboxxx and 3 years after the last OutKast song was released (granted, Andre took more than 2 decades after Love Below, so it isn't like Big Boi took forever like he did lmao). As such, before listening to Sir Lucious Left Foot..., I had to keep in mind that by this point, OutKast was done, and this was Big Boi at a much different point in time. And honestly, I enjoyed the record. I hate that I keep bringing it up, but this really feels like a direct successor to what Speakerboxxx was doing. Big Boi sounds fresh as h--- on tracks like "Tangerine" and "You Ain't No DJ". In terms of features, I think that most of them did pretty well, with special shout outs to Gucci on "Shine Blockas" (sidenote: based on the gif tha Wreckless used, I 100% thought that he was gonna pick The State vs Radric Davis lmao). My favorite track would probably have to be the outro song "Back Up Plan" however, which has one of my favorite beats on this record. I know that I said that I would detach the OutKast record from my evaluation of this album, but I did get a kick out of the skits and the Big Rube narration on "General Patton" Production wise, I am a bit mixed however. I think that the tracks produced by frequent OutKast producers Organized Noize and Andre were probably my favorite, and I have to give shout outs to my GOAT Lil Jon. Despite this, I'm not as big on the songs produced by the likes of Scott Storch and Royal Flush. While I did enjoy my time with Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, I wouldn't really say that I enjoy it as much as Speakerboxxx. I can't even really explain why honestly. Big Boi is as fresh as ever, and many of the beats and features were pretty good, but as a whole, I feel like the project didn't really grab me, y'know? I do think that it is a very competent record, and it feels like a natural continuation of Big Bo's previous work, but as a whole, I didn't fall in love with it or anything. Still, I am glad that I finally checked it out, and I thank @Wreckless for the pick. FAVORITE TRACKS: Tangerine, You Ain't No DJ, Night Night, Shine Blockas, Back Up Plan Rating: 7/10 @AOTWClub @Justin Trudeau
