Feb 8, 2015 So Kanye went on record that New Slaves was about Nike not giving him royalties o̶v̶e̶r̶p̶r̶i̶c̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶s̶h̶o̶e̶. Is this the dumbest call to social equality of all time? Does he honestly believe that he deserves to walk into the fashion industry without credentials? Are his childish outbursts hilarious? Are his fans the only people who hold him in high regard?
Feb 8, 2015 saw him say new slaves was about Nike by not specifically because they "overpriced his shoe" source?
Feb 8, 2015 http://m.pitchfork.com/news/58379-kanye-west-performs-calls-out-nike-during-big-sean-show/ Isn't it common knowledge that he was disappointed that only resellers could cop Red Octobers? @Jet
Feb 8, 2015 Then what did he say? I don't really follow gossip and pop culture. I don't wear basketball shoes. I've had one pair of white AF1s ever as a present. Why you mad tho @Flacko
Feb 8, 2015 no..? also doesn't help your case that he turned around and only made 3,000 with adidas. that's only gonna convert to super-high resale value shoes again. not to mention they retailed for cheaper on Nike than they currently do for Adidas. with that be said though, these new jawns are very, very ugly. don't like them at all.
Feb 8, 2015 How is he mad? He made a valid point about a song that calls for social equality in opportunities being purely motivated by pretty much the biggest sneaker company not complying to his sense of entitlement in fashion. Didn't he sell a plain white t for like a $100? lol
Feb 8, 2015 Come on man, I know you're actually a smart person and don't have this poor of reading comprehension. He just said that Nike is what caused him to make those songs, not that that's what they are explicitly about. I don't care about his shoes or pay attention to his fashion ventures, but if him feeling like he got s--- on by the fashion industry as a black man is what got him angry enough to make a song like New Slaves (which, yes, he does talk about fashion, but it's also very explicitly about the prison industrial complex), then that's fine by me.
Feb 8, 2015 He didnt choose the pricing for that. New Slaves was not about royalties and general frustration with the industry rather than the price of the shoe.
Feb 8, 2015 The fact that a shoe company not giving him royalties led to him making a song about the modern state of racism is HILARIOUS. It's like an Onion article. You know the government administers AIDs.
Feb 8, 2015 Yeah, but you're leaving out the part where he felt as if he was being s--- on/not accepted specifically because he's black. I mean honestly I don't know anything about the fashion industry, so I don't know how often discrimination based upon race does or doesn't happen, but the notion of it doesn't seem too crazy to me. It goes to show that s--- like that can still happen to you even if you're a millionaire/celebrity.
Feb 8, 2015 Oh and BTW I'm not implying Kanye never overreacts or doesn't ever act childish. Most of his music is very reactionary, but I think you're purposefully painting him in the wrong light on this one.
Feb 8, 2015 Bruh, the song compares a contract dispute with a sneaker empire to slavery. Please don't try to defend this right now. It's a b---- fit by a millionaire coopting a struggle against institutional racism. It's hilarious.
Feb 8, 2015 Saying he wrote the whole song specifically targeting Nike is disingenuous at best. Sure they inspired him to write the songs but what he's saying in the songs is bigger than just him. He may be talking about himself but he knows it can be interpreted to include the way many black people feel. What he's saying goes for a lot of black people not just Kanye
