Jun 30, 2015 Jacked this from RG Alright Video BREAKDOWN So, first we can see that the video in it’s entirety is in black and white. We open with a few shots of different places across America/California. During this, we can here the interlude of u playing. The black and white can be trying to express the depression felt in i and how the listener should be feeling during “Alright” Kendrick begins to recite a variation of the poem we have come to know. Probably a proto version, replacing “Lucy” with “Lucifer”, mentioning a “safe haven” etc. We begin to here a Pre-GKMC track, “Cartoon and Cereal”, in the background. We see and unarmed, handcuffed man shot down by a police officer. We cut to Black Hippie in a car, Kendrick spitting a new verse talking about “TELL ME WHO DA b---- n----- HATIN ON MEeeeEEEee?!?! JUMPIN ON MY d-ck, BUT DIS d-ck AINT FRREEEeeEEeeEEE” The actual song starts. From there it just shows that things are bad, really bad, but it’ll all be fine eventually. This is why Alright came directly after i on the album. We see Kenny atop of cop cars very similar to his BET performance the other night. Kendrick is probably trying to help people (as of now) through the massacre of black people—most recently the Charleston Shooting. As I said before, this song does pretty much come from a dark place. The feeling shouldn’t be “I am happy right now”, but “I am not happy, but I am very hopeful for the future”. The lack of color definitely highlights that. Also, it may be showing a “black and white” view of the Cops vs Blacks conflict. No grey area is how many people may see it. Anyway, we end with Kendrick being shot off of a light pole by a policeman using finger guns. He had a real gun, but for some symbolic reason, he doesn’t use it. Perhaps to show the way a police officer is so willing to take a life carelessly. Like a child playing cops and robbers with fake finger guns? We end with Kendrick semingly dead on the pavement, but then he cracks a smile. As said before, things may not be good right now, but, it’ll get better. When you know we've been hurt--been down before. n-----, when our pride was low, lookin at the world like 'where do we go?'. n-----, and we hate popo, wanna k--- us dead in the streat for sho. n-----, I'm at the preacher's door.....my knees getting weak AND MY GUN MIGHT BLOW BUT WE GON BE ALRIGHT!
