Oct 23, 2015 Week 3 Day 1: Wesley's Theory When I get signed, homie, I'mma act a fool Hit the dance floor, strobe lights in the room Welcome to Week 3 of Kendrick SOTD. Im sorry 4 the wait, im sorry 4 the wait. Yes it’s finally here, now calm yourself. The song we are going to be listening today is the intro song from ‘To p---- A Butterfly’ aka AOTY and if you don’t think so then we gonna have problems. Presenting you this song is the best female in the forum @shahidah ; okay let’s get it. shahidah: The first thing that catches my attention is the cracking/crackling sound, which instantly gives me the image that I'm putting an old vinyl record on. That combined with the fade in of Boris Gardiner's "Every n---- Is a Star" takes me back, in only the first min of the song. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51PlMzSdo2L._SX355_.jpg I cant help but get that classic vibe, like a Motown record. George Clinton ' intro = summary of poem > summary of album.... "Hit me! When the four corners of this cocoon collide You’ll slip through the cracks hopin' that you’ll survive Gather your way, take a deep look inside Are you really who they idolize? To p---- a butterfly" The first line reminds me of the process of becoming a butterfly, "you'll slip through the cracks..." describes breaking from the cocoon. Where he says "Gather your wind, take a deep look inside.." - I imagine that's Kendrick growing wings and looking inside his soul or simply remembering where he comes from and thinking... "Are you really who they idolize?" He's asking himself if he's ready to be a leader. "Lookin' down is quite a drop (It's quite a drop, drop) Lookin' good when you're on top (When you're on top you got it) A lot of metaphors, leavin' miracles metaphysically in a state of euphoria Look both ways before you cross my mind." Kendrick totally has me stumped with this line "A lot of metaphors, leavin' miracles metaphysically in a state of euphoria". Unless he's referring to the previous 2 lines and that being on top of the game it's a long way down. I mean this one went right over my head. Also, it's always a nice surprise when I'm listening to it with headphones and I hear the shift in beat from the right ear to the left ear when George Clinton sings, cross. Finally, HUGE s/o to the engineer(s) and producer(s) on flowing the Sax solo at the end of Wesleys Theory, with the beginning solo on For Free. The timing was perfect, Kudos. Sad part is there's so much more to this track, I barely scratched the surface, but I look forward to discovering other things that I love about it as I listen in the future. Oct 23, 2015 I just had the urge to play it this morning. Man when you haven't played it in a while and then you put it back on and really listen, Its live reliving the whole first time listen experience; its amazing
Oct 23, 2015 Exactly. That's why after I've played an album constantly I skip it for a good few months. Let that urge come back to play it in full and it's amazing. Had it this morning with Tetsuo & Youth.
Oct 29, 2015 Week 3 Day 2: Blow My High Look at my life then look at yours Get some ambition, why you bored? Welcome to Week 3 Day 2 of Kendrick SOTD, This may be one of the shortest SOTD I may have done. Today we listening to “Blow My High” a song of Kendrick's debut album Section.80 Kendrick pays a tribute to Left Eye, p---- C and Aaliyah in this song. The first voice in this song you hear is a slowed down p---- C sample from the song Big Pimpin being used as hook. Kendrick raps over this and it is just the smoothest s--- ever. Smoking out, pouring up, keep that lean up in my cup All my car got leather and wood in my hood we call it buck Everybody wanna ball, holla at broads at the mall If he up, watch him fall, I can't f--- with y'all (p---- a--- ho n----s) I can't f--- with y'all (b------s all up in my business) I can't f--- with y'all (Industry of counterfeits) I can't f--- with y'all The song actually sounds pretty short, but it is a very relaxing experience. Kendrick gives two short verses that just sound amazing. Kendrick’s voice carries a sense of calmness that has a perfect chemistry with the instrumental, the song really has no flaws whatsoever. The song ends with an Aaliyah sample from “4 page letter” RIP Aaliyah @KendrickSXN
Oct 29, 2015 The amount of homage paid in this song is OD...I enjoy bumping this song when I'm taking a long car ride. 4 Page Letter is one of my favorite songs by Aaliyah too .
Nov 9, 2015 Week 3 Day 3: Good Kid Look inside these walls And you see I'm havin' withdrawals of a prisoner on his way Trapped inside your desire to fire bullets that stray Track attire just tell you I'm tired and ran away I should ask a choir "What do you require To sing a song that acquire me to have faith?" Been a minute since I done this and Jehovah apologizes for that but let’s skip that petty s---. Welcome to Kendrick SOTD Week 3 Day 3. Today we are listening to Good Kid, from Kendrick’s album good kid, m.A.A.d city *cough* Album of the decade *cough*. This is a song that does not get talked about enough. The way that Kendrick starts of this song is just flawless. Those opening lyrics are gold and just sets the tone for the whole f*cking song. Kendrick tells a story and the first verse appears to be a continuation from the Poetic Justice skit where he is approached. The song tackles the negativity of gangs in Compton in the first verse and then police brutality in the 2nd verse. Kendrick links both of these verses together at the end with the way the both end. The first verse ending with: I don't mind cause one day you'll respect the good kid, m.A.A.d city The second verse ending with: He don't mind, he know we'll never respect, the good kid, m.A.A.d. city Those goons that beat the s--- out of Kendrick might do a 360 in the future and come to respect the man that Kendrick has become but the cops will just look at Kendrick as another black man. The last and short verse Kendrick finds himself in a room where he just describes the money, drugs and depression that surrounds him which I guess Kendrick could also be using this as a metaphor for the society he lives in. There are a lot of amazing songs in GKMC but this one might deserve a spot in the top 5. @KendrickSXN
Nov 9, 2015 d--- you opened my eyes to this song a lot more....I need to charge up my phone so I can listen to the cd
