I've got a little 11 year old nephew who, after playing Desiigner-Panda on youtube the other day, told me he "loves hip-hop". Designer is not hip-hop, neither was the rest of the trash he proceeded to play. So I've decided I'm going to give him an education in the art. I'm trying to put together a kid friendly playlist, by "kid friendly" I just mean no excessive swearing.

I've got a couple Pac tracks in there, a bit of Jurassic 5, The Roots and Mos Def. I'm really struggling to pull cuss free tracks from my head though and figured the collective minds of SXN80 might be able to give me a few ideas. Does anyone have any recommendations that could steer a young mind towards the appreciation of real lyricism?

Heavy D, Kid N Play. The 90s is tough cause that's when rap was pretty much just street music. Try the 80s lol

I don't think he's going to get a real appreciation for lyricism if it's all kid friendly. I think he's going need to see both the explicit and non explicit side of Rap. When I was 11, I got into Tribe, Rakim, Fugees, Pete Rock & CL Smooth because of my uncle. At the same time, I was also listening to Mobb Deep, Lost Boyz, Pac, BIG, Wu-Tang, Nas, Redman because of my cousins.

I have no problem with him listening to Desiigner, I have a problem with him thinking it's hip-hop. He's better than that. Good, old, hip-hop is "dusty" in the same way the bottle of 50yr old single malt in my local is dusty. It may not come off the shelf much but those with real taste know it's the best thing on offer.

I fully intend to show him both sides, I just need to make sure the playlist he takes home doesn't come under too much scrutiny from my sister, I don't think she'd react too well if I sent him home with a USB stick loaded with BIG, Wu and JMT.

Some great suggestions there though, thanks man.

NF is really good and kid friendly, he's a Christian rapper but just barely, he actually only has a couple Christian songs, the rest are just no swearing in them.

And therein lies the problem. Will you be the cool uncle who tells your nephew "Take these songs and remember, you didn't get them from me" or will you be the "We have to do what your mom says" uncle? No half measures m8. Fortunately for me, my nephews are a couple of nerds who don't really listen to Rap and love anime.
