It's one of the most mesmerizing films I've ever seen. I mostly like it, but I feel it toys the line of being too weird for weirdness sake at a few points. Don't want to give it a score because I don't really understand it yet. Want to give it a few days to digest before reading anything or jumping to any real conclusion about its quality.

    I'm a fan though.

I've heard it said that monster movies are a product of the atomic age and alien movies are a product of the space age. I've seen two of the latter and while Forbidden Planet functioned as an entertaining novelty, cultivating the ideas for a time more suitable to visualize, this movie was perfectly timed. So well in fact you've probably seen multiple projects that were directly influenced by it, the most recent being Edgar Wright's The World's End. While all of the resulting films want it's plot device, not until seeing the film for myself was I presented with its purpose. While the dilemma of human emotion may not be explored to any significant extent, it is still a crucial detail to omit. It's short, tight, and the best of its kind. Although I can't say that with certainty until I see Andy Kaufman's 1978 remake. It had some creative shots which surprised me considering its biggest strengths were a far cry from the conventions of arthouse. I personally think the last minute was a huge copout and had the film been a little more ballsy, its impact could have been a lot stronger. Open endings > Deus ex machina.

I enjoyed Escape from Alcatraz a few times while growing up so I was already a fan of the director going in. It has me interested in his other films.

I too saw The Babadook last night. I dug it quite a bit. Its trajectory is fairly obvious early on and it does employ a number of traditional horror tropes, but director Jennifer Kent utilizes them in a number of clever ways and, as such, her consistently unnerving horror film also doubles as a moving portrayal of coping with loss. Essie Davis in the lead delivers a classic horror performance, one that should warrant awards season attention but won't cause of its genre.

Watched St. Vincent last night. I wasn't wild about it, it was hampered by an incredibly predictable plot that relies on well-worn conventions without much shame or even self-awareness. It also is too eager to tack on subplots that don't add much or aren't explored enough to be interesting. Still, all that aside, it's a worthy watch because the cast is fantastic, particularly Bill Murray (who may even deserve Oscar consideration). He makes the end credits alone worth the price of admission. Overall it's unspectacular but entertaining enough.

Dumb and dumber to: 20 years later and 20 years to late, the jokes were stale, some scenes were reminiscent of the first one but poorly executed, can't compare to the first one and as a stand alone film it's pretty disappointing which is a shame. The prequel (when harry met Lloyd) > this one. 1.5/5

Saw horrible bosses 2 tonight, thought it was pretty d--- bad, a lot worse than the original. 1.5/5 and that's probably being a little generous. Did anyone like it? Everyone else in the theater wasn't laughing much either.

Tusk - I was kinda digging the first half of this, it was funny at times but still quite dark, and the "reveal" was humorous but still somehow quite disturbing. And then that dickhead Johnny Depp showed up and ruined it with an over the top unfunny performance. 5/10

    Memento.

This was really f----- up movie. The sequencing of the scences were masterful tho. I was so confused and had so much thoughts after the ending that I had to read the summary of the plot on internet.

    The Croods (2013)
Tried to watch Le chat du rabbin (2011), but my girlfriend insisted on this (send help). Nicholas Cage was excellent in it and sometimes it felt like they catered to having him on board. The character designs were kind of an eyesore to me. It's watchable, but it's nothing special.

Saw Liv Ullman's Miss Julie...a heightened melodrama that's well performed but somewhat flat dramatically. It's cool to see Jessica Chastain go BIG in a performance in a way she hasn't before, and she does certainly deliver, as do Colin Farrell and Samantha Morton. However, Ullman remains so loyal to the play and does little to go beyond its stage roots that it feels oddly out of time. Additionally, the monologue-heavy script allows emotion to be clearly conveyed without ever truly resonating.

    Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
Probably my second favorite Miyazaki picture. The dark undertones he's dealt with before translate to a curiously dark humor the most effectively here. The signature animation incorporates the advancements in the technology without sacrificing any integrity. There's magic as opposed to reality and then there's magic realism, which I think this film falls more in line with. Perhaps most importantly, Christian Bale discovers the Batman voice.
