May 19, 2021 *rolls eyes* This sounds like a post on r/I’m14andthisisdeep Listen I was a back-packer when I was in HS. I like and grew up on the underground s---. I listened to stuff like Hieroglyphics, Kool Keith, Jedi Mind Tricks before any of my friends. Then I grew up and realized there’s nothing wrong with commercial music. Stop hating things because they are popular. Often times things are popular because they are good. I’m not saying this is always the case but there usually is some kind of quality behind it. It’s like Starbucks. Is there better coffee out there? Sure but it got popular because it was good coffee and the market valued it as such.
May 19, 2021 I never said any of that lol “It just feels like a useless metric as it doesn’t apply to the music itself.“ I never stated I don’t listen to mainstream music — I said I’m no longer confined to it. It has its place, should it stand against the greats though? No. Plus things are popular due to mass appeal not quality, sometime can correlate but isn’t part of the rule & also depends on content. Sexualised content sells more than conscious content for example, does that make sexual content better? No. But it has more appeal due to targeting a part of our biological conditioning.
May 19, 2021 Casual listeners are looking for fun stuff. That's why they listen to him or other fun to listen to rappers.
May 19, 2021 I would walk out the gym for playing that trash, And also find another house if my room mates were drake fan girls
May 19, 2021 Dodging Drake's music in America must be hard. So many people crying and we still don't even have a release date
May 19, 2021 Bro....Eminem is in the GOAT discussion for far more than sales. Sales only get brought up when people falsely claim that no one listens to him anymore. Plus, Nelly, MC Hammer, and Will Smith aren't in anyone's top 10 list even though they sold millions of records(and have Diamond albums).
May 19, 2021 Having more mass appeal doesn't make you the greatest though. Jay, Nas, Wayne. and Em have long runs but you can actually vouch for their rap skills and pen beyond sales/charts. The fact that many Drake stans have to fall back on sales and streaming to consider him one of the GOAT's is very telling.
May 19, 2021 People keep streaming and buying cause his music is fun and so replayable. We've even seen it with features, dude turns an ok song into a hit pretty much making it his song. That's why he is in the position he is, I don't care who's the best lyricist out of them 3 if I wont listen to the album again cause I didn't enjoy it much.
May 19, 2021 Nelly, Hammer and Will fell off. Drake kept coming with fun stuff every year, even the ones when he doesn't drop a project. Can't compare.
May 19, 2021 I discovered him when he had Best I Ever Had and Succesful and I've been enjoying his nusic since then. And it's been over a decade of fun records.
May 19, 2021 Re-read what I said. I never said sales make someone great. All I said is that they were a performance metric. It’s absolutely silly to say, DO NOT count sales as opposed to saying let’s count everything from hit singles, lyrical ability, flow, beat selection, impact, classic albums, etc. You guys keep moving goal posts.
May 19, 2021 I agree with the first part. The second part doesn’t make sense to me. People argue Drake’s numbers because that’s the playing field he’s in. It’s like saying let’s not count J. Cole’s corny lines against him in a comparison against Kendrick when they are in a competing as lyrical rappers.
