Feb 16, 2016 What I'm saying shouldn't really be contrarian at all. I think it's obvious. Forced apologies are disingenuous by definition. He still thinks gays are worse than animals. It didn't change his mind, so what are you trying to do? It just makes people feel good to think he was humbled into an apology -- which is a pretty gross impulse, to be honest.
Feb 17, 2016 It's such a first world privilege to look at people from third world backgrounds and call them names for not accepting gay people.
Feb 17, 2016 Yeah.I just think it's backward to view him as some sort of misbegotten free speech martyr. He said something stupid - he's not being punished for being anti gay marriage, or pro life. Comparing gays to animals is at best silly and absurd, worst disturbing in its barbarism. He can either stand by his words and sacrifice the image he's cultivated as a renaissance man. Or he can chock up an apology and walk away. People should be held accountable for how they characterize historically targeted groups... his words earn plaudits from people still thinking its up for debate whether being gay is a mental illness (not you, but just a reminder what's at stake) I agree it's disingenuous but unfortunately there needs to be some level of PC policing to curb broader, truly stupid attitudes about what being "gay" means. Like..its 2016..
Feb 17, 2016 That something being an opinion doesn't makes it automatically right and uncriticable. Kinda weird I have to explain this to a grown adult
Feb 17, 2016 "No need to get all up in arms and condemn the man"-post I was answering. As you've seen, English isn't my first language, neither my second, but I think that pretty much means we shouldn't condemn him for his opinion
Feb 17, 2016 I'm sorry but "If you disagree with him then disagree with him. No need to get all up in arms and condemn the man." does not mean the same thing as "if something's an opinion it's right and uncriticable"
Feb 17, 2016 I don't mean to martyr him either. He said some dumb s---. But the response to dumb s--- can't be to shame people into pretending they don't think whatever dumb s--- they actually do think. He should feel free to make an a--- out of himself. And we should feel free to think less of him for having regressive ideas. That's how you hold him accountable. The forced apology is a strange cultural ritual. It doesn't actually mean anything to him to give it, and it doesn't actually mean anything for us to hear it. It's meaningless.
Feb 17, 2016 yeah, i think we're talking in circles. the fake apology is mostly an acknowledgement he f----- up his own brand. sure u saw nike ended their endorsement, which is obviously their right, and a recognition in todays world you have to be homophobic in more polite, image-conscious ways
Feb 17, 2016 That's very pragmatic. It's also a very dishonest way to have public discourse. We should be more critical of it. That's all I'm saying.
Feb 17, 2016 no argument here. its a game of bs hot potato. nike is demonstrating good "csr" honest or not, stupid people should be shamed for having stupid opinions. i dont like the cop out pov where we have to accept bad, even offensive opinions bc of "cultural heritage"
