Nov 10, 2015 Hi all, Serious topic. Followers of college football, people interested in race relations, academics, and lovers of food may be following what's happening at the University of Missouri. Backstory: racial tension is a longstanding issue at the school, and growing protests drew national attention, especially as the system’s president, Tim Wolfe, resigned Monday morning amid widening protests (including the football team going on strike). In particular, I wanted to ask about your reaction to this video: Were the protesters right to deny the photographer's attempts to film the camp? Was he infringing on their privacy rights? The group of protesters, Concerned Student 1950, said on Twitter Monday night that they wanted no media at the camp site, to protect the group “from twisted insincere narratives.” “There were media personnel who were very hostile toward us when we asked to have certain spaces respected,” the group tweeted, adding in another tweet later, “We truly appreciate having our story told, but this movement isn’t for you.” This is an interesting case that touches several third rails. Putting aside the escalating tensions, I wondered who you sided with: the crowd or the journalist? @Skippy @WPG @Kon @Cyreides @Trackz @JMG @Charlie Strangelove
Nov 10, 2015 as a general practice, barring the press is a bad move. why decline to tell your side, especially when that gives the opposition free reign to control the narrative? i don't know enough about the situation to say whether the photographers really were being hostile, which could actually be the case, but it seems as if the protesters were trying to make a point through all of this. and on that note, they probably succeed to a degree by making us have this conversation. if i'm trying to spin it in their favor: while protesting their school's inattentiveness to issues of race, they also called into question the national media's treatment of similar stories in other communities. it's probably the kind of thing that only makes sense in the relative bubble of college.
Nov 10, 2015 correct, among other incidents. its definitely possible the photographer was being overly aggressive, but to me its all a question of optics. at least that was my line of thought -- dunno i see how a mob bullying a photog calls into question anything besides their own motives. i dont know all the details like you, but my immediate response was what are they trying to hide? could it be bc butler wasnt fasting as he claimed (or is it bc journalists love junk food and would likely tempt them: "you're not urself today... eat a snickers" "you get a little self righteous when you're hungry")
Nov 10, 2015 i'm not very educated on the situation at all, but when the professor, or whoever she was, at the end yelled "we need some muscle over here" i was like wtf.... i don't think she should have said that lol. but it didn't appear that the press were doing anything wrong. it was almost bullying the guy trying to take pics. he's just doing his job. again, i don't know much, if any, backstory or context w/ this particular situation, so i could be way off here.
Nov 10, 2015 except in those cases it borders on actual harassment/stalking. based off this fairly long video alone, the photog was trying to capture a historic event.
Nov 10, 2015 Yea, I'm definitely siding with the photographer on this one. He makes that mob look like a bunch of immature douchebags...especially at the end when they pulled the "It's our right to walk forward" card. Edit: at least in this video. I didn't look into the whole story or anything.
Nov 10, 2015 As someone who planned on going to Mizzou for journalism, that video frightens me. I think the protestors definitely are bringing up valid issues, but as always there's some f---ing idiots in the bunch.
Nov 10, 2015 Aren't there pretty clear cut laws about this? The legality of it does not strike me as a gray area.
Nov 10, 2015 Pardon me if I'm guilty of McCarthyism, am I wrong to say that since the 1960's the far left have taken over academia?
Nov 10, 2015 The irony of those black kids inhibiting the reporter from investigating racism on campus
Nov 10, 2015 Dude you're fucken brainwashed by /b/ my man.. there's a different possible future world that's never been painted for you
Nov 10, 2015 You're acting as if what I'm saying is madness. Where do you think Liberal philopsphies, discussions, whatever...where do you think it happens? Think tanks. Often they are universities. I'm not saying they are ran by reptillian Jews. I'm not trying to act like the GOP are much better. Koch brothers, Wall Street, Oil industries, they influence people in a way, too. Stop trying to paint something that counters your opinion as "crazy talk", I'm not brainwashed. Not yet, at least. I consider myself middle of the road.
