Came home after being gone for a couple weeks and found that the casing was pushing/bending outward on the bottom left corner. took it into the shop and they told me that not only was my battery dead and expanding (which could lead to the trackpad breaking and the keyboard malfunctioning), but that my hard drive has bad sectors and is about to crap out (and that i'm lucky to be able to start it up right now...which takes a realll long time).

do i upgrade now? wait it out for the next refresh, or try something else?

    An expanding battery is dangerous.
I really hope they told you that.

Make sure you've got everything backed up on another hard drive or USB. You shouldn't hold out when it comes to malfunctions like these. It's not going to get better by waiting. If you can afford it, upgrade, it'd be for the best.

Bit of everything. I need some power for Adobe, etc. I've done 3D animation stuff in the past as well. Not sure what the future holds. Need that flexibility, but likely not the very very top of the line.

    Does apple actually partake?

They actually told me the opposite. Said that their batteries expand as a safety precaution, designed to do so so they don't explode or catch fire.

Got it all on my external via time machine. Just hoping that there's no extra steps I need to perform or anything like that when backing it up in order to do a full restore from.

It's definitely not likely, but I wouldn't risk my s--- over a defective battery.
Overcharging will k--- your battery quicker. Keep that in mind to make the next one last.

only windows machine i'd consider getting is the surface book. i think it's premature on that though, seeing that it's in its first iteration.

...i would get a mbp, from an apple store.

that's likley what happened -- i used to dock my laptop frequently and would just leave it plugged in. wish there was a dock-mode setting so that the battery would be switched off and not ruined when docked and plugged in.

Wait till March if you can, but if you can't, I just picked up the new 15 inch retina pro a few months back and I love it.

I'm curious if they're going to introduce a bigger version of their new Macbook line in March though. You travel a lot so I would think that new slim/lightweight design would be ideal for you.

@Slyk in the mean time, just pop out the battery and use it only when its plugged in. That video @Charlie Strangelove posted, plus the trackpad and the keyboard issue - I wouldn't risk it.

If you want though, I bet you could easily pop in a replacement battery as well as a new SSD yourself for less than $200. I did that to my 2009 MBP and it gave me an extra 2 years happily.
