Oct 24, 2015 I haven't digeested this 100% bc I'm at a steakhouse rn but I'm just curious about the rationale about some of these picks. Like when I looked this morning some def seemed like BIG hits, or defining songs for an icon. I haven't read the book so I'm just confused and sad about insinuating u may have an anti eminem bias
Oct 24, 2015 Lose yourself to me made eminem a transcendal artist... I def get the rationale for my name is depending on the rubric I suppose --- it's not like eminem ultimately changed hip hop in any way tho right? Like isn't it true eminem --huge though he is -- didn't profoundly impact the art form? Ok gf back
Oct 24, 2015 i think the idea was simply "most important song of the year" in terms of which song had the greatest impact that year and in the immediate future, say a half decade. this year, that wiz khalifa song from furious 7 tied lose yourself as the rap song with the longest reign at #1 on billboard. would anyone say it's "the most important rap song of the year?" chart presence in and of itself is not the answer here, and it becomes a smaller and smaller component the more famous the artist was before he or she dropped the song in question. there's a reason people buy this book instead of just "sort by: date" on the billboard archives.
Oct 25, 2015 i didnt want to make a thread for this so ill just post it here lol. this song sounds so nice. cant wait!
Oct 26, 2015 Oh BTW guys huge Wire spoilers on page 98 so if you haven't seen that masterpiece of a TV show skip that page.
Oct 26, 2015 snark aside, i feel like this is a terrible post bc you 100% skirted by my question about My Name Is/Lose Yourself. I resent you reducing my query to "lol CA thinks popularity=importance" -- just wondering why one Eminem song was picked over another. having not read the book, im a little blind but it seems to me whatever impact my name is had, lose yourself did doubly so. besides introducing eminem, its a novelty song no ?Why are you talking about wiz khalifa? sometimes its ok to say 'yeah, good point, im not sure' this is how perceptions develop
Oct 26, 2015 out of curiosity, what was gold diggers legacy? not trying to be a pill, am adding this to my bday list tbh
Oct 26, 2015 Lol stupid list. 1 - First thing I realized was they tried too hard to give an artist one place in the list. Eminem could've easily have 3-4. LOSE YOURSELF specially 2- 1986 Ice T ???! Walk This Way by Run DMC and Aerosmith was f---in' huge tho... Some are relatable and reasonable but some of the songs there just non-sense. Idk...
Oct 26, 2015 i basically said "yeah, good point, not sure" re: my name is. i don't think that song should be there. but i stand by the wiz point on the topic of lose yourself/grindin. there's no doubt the former was the bigger song--it's one of the biggest rap songs ever--but in terms of changing the course of hip-hop (or at the very least being emblematic of changes that were happening), grindin wins. i would nitpick lots of these myself, but 6 in the morning more or less invented modern gangsta rap.
Oct 26, 2015 What did Lose Yourself do for rap besides be a really good song? Cuz each song is chosen year-by-year, not artist-by-artist. It's you end up with a group like Outkast not appearing except in a feature.
Oct 26, 2015 right, i guess i just find lists like this inherently faulty. in a few cases, sure there's obvious picks... but its descends into a muddle more often than not. (plus, it results in a bunch of know-it-alls debating air) Honestly, i think Lose Yourself is being short charged here. all due respect to the arguments being laid out, i get it (TRUST ME I GET IT)... but i feel like there's something to be said for the way a song like that rly affirmed rap as a cultural and global staple. you have a handful of songs that rly demonstrate the medium isn't some flash in the pan. Walk This Way, Nuthin But a G Thang, Lose Yourself, handful of others. it's not merely a question of Billboard, but songs that rank among the all time greatest songs in pop culture. could be a separate topic, again not having read the book, but that's my gospel for the day
Oct 26, 2015 what's the deal about others tho ? What about My Name Is ? Lose Yourself was the only song to win an Oscar as I remember. Isn't that important enough ?

Nov 2, 2015 What's a good sports analogy for Kendrick Lamar vs J Cole "that time that michael jordan played basketball with elmer fudd in space jam."
