You guys, I am at a total loss for a word. I know for a fact that the Oilers had an offer on the table at the draft for a #1 defenseman who, while a little older/more expensive than Larsson, is also better and a team captain and would only cost them RNH and #4. Giving up Hall is insane.

but i'm glad we'll finally make the playoffs now.

even after trading hall, this is my top 6:
    Lucic - McDavid - Puljujarvi
    Draisaitl - RNH - Eberle

which is better than your top 6 unless you're a dallas stars fan.

McDonagh is a left shot, and our current left shot depth is:

    Klefbom
    Sekera
    Davidson
    Nurse
    Reinhart

All who should be top 4 guys (Nurse and Reinhart are the only ones who aren't yet).

    Our right side depth:
    Fayne
    ???

Giving up RNH and Puljujarvi for McDonagh is a lot, and then you need to restructure your entire D to move some of those left shot . We needed a right shot, so Hall for Larsson is the bette deal.

No matter if we got ripped off, we're a better team for it. Getting Subban or Pietrangelo would have been a Lindros type deal. Hall + 1st Rounder + Nurse/Klefbom.

Larsson isn't going to win the Oilers a cup, but he and Klefbom as a top pairing will get us to the playoffs at least.

Finally, this has been the longest decade any sports fan should have to endure.

The Penguins proved that with the right coaching and group of forwards, a team with an average defensive core can win the cup. The thing the Oilers are missing is an elite #1 defensman that can play 30 minutes per night to make it work though. Without Letang playing 27 minutes per night, the Penguins don't even make the playoffs.

This trade made zero sense for the Oilers, they could have gotten a lot more for Hall. At best, Larsson is a decent 2nd pairing guy. I wouldn't trust him to play the big minutes.

Has the Oilers GM made any statements about this deal? This could be the biggest misunderstanding in NHL history. When the Devils GM said "I'll offer Adam Larsson" he could have easily heard "Oliver Ekkman-Larsson" (even though he plays for the Coyotes) and jumped on that offer too fast without questioning it.

    Oilers forward depth:
    1. McDavid
    2. Hall
    3. RNH
    4. Draisaitl
    6. Puljujarvi
    7. Eberle
    8. Lucic
    9. Pouliot
    10. Yakupov

    Oilers defence depth:
    1. Klefbom
    2. Sekera
    3. Davidson
    4. Nurse

How do you win when you only have one guy capable of top pairing minutes, and one guy capable of top 4 minutes? Hall for Larsson is terrible straight across value, but the team makes the Oilers a better team.

It was either that, or they could have went out and got Subban for all of this:

So you would have gutted your forward depth and added a top 1 piece while shipping out a top 2 piece. That's a "wheels in the mud" type deal. Larsson is a 23 minute a night guy who matches up against the best talent on the opposing team, and has more d zone starts than any other.

    Hall >>>>> Larsson
but the Oilers rn > the Oilers this morning

Great day to be a Bolts fan. Next season we still have Bishop and a beastly backup goalie, with Hedman in the back and the triplets with TJ, Kuch, and Palat as well as Stamkos and a rising star in Jonathon Drouin. We were one game away from playing in the cup with our backup goalie and no Steven Stamkos. A healthy Bolts team wins the Cup this year.

    @Mike Tyson
The thing about Larsson is he isn't even that good, I've never been impressed watching him play. He really benefited from the defensive style that New Jersey plays and the fact that their defensive core was pretty weak so they had to play him. He's at best a 2nd pairing defenseman and his flaws will quickly be exposed in the Oilers system. The only reason he makes the Oilers any better is because their defense was just that bad. It's a slight upgrade on the backend but it's a huge downgrade to their forward group. It would have made a lot more sense to go all in on Jason Demers in free agency rather than trade Hall for Larsson while signing Lucic.

The Oilers have good depth up front, it should be interesting to see Draisaitl does without Hall. Almost all of his success last year came playing with Hall and he seemed to struggle without him (at least from what I saw). I don't think you can't really count on Puljujarvi to be in the NHL for 2-3 years.

Puljujarvi was being in the Finnish elite league since he was 16, so he's been playing against men for 2 years now. That's why he crushed the WJC getting 17 points in 12 games. He was a man playing against boys. The only question on whether or not his game will translate is going from the big ice to the small ice. He'll be NHL ready by mid season.

And that's fair. I won't comment on Larsson until I actually see him play more than 2 times a year. From what I saw, he's a strong skater with a good first pass. Limited offensive potential, and for that reason, he's not a true 1D. But that's the role he was playing on the Devils, playing 25 minutes a night with 69% d-zone starts and still managed to end the season at a +15. The strides he made in the last 12-15 months have been similar to what Hedman made from ages 21-22.

It's a hard trade to stomach because you're banking on "potential" right now. But I see why it had to be done. Sucks that it came at the expense of my favourite player :emoji_slight_frown:

Also expect Tyson Barrie to be an Oiler in the next few days, there's a big deal coming between Edmonton and Colorado from what I've heard, and Barrie is the only player that makes sense.
