Mar 20, 2022 I don’t really care either way tbh. Country would be better off but I’m not one to root for people’s death unless they’re truly heinous.
Mar 20, 2022 You really think paying people more than 175k annually will just make the people better and do better work? - when there are multiple studies saying money can bring you happiness but it caps out at around 75k-90k annually and anymore after that your happiness is dependant on living circumstances, relationships and your work/life balance. Doubt raising some drones salary from 175k a year to 200k a year will make the disparaged, 30k-40k income per year, almost poverty living people will go "oh f--- yes, congress raised pay, gonna be a political figure now!" Laughing out loud lol. The people who have less than 50k per year for example, 99.99% of those people don't give a s--- about politics enough to even keep up with it or watch/read news. They wouldn't know about the pay rise until congress members are at 1 million a year and someone makes a meme of it on social media.
Mar 20, 2022 I mean you don’t have to theorize, the research is available & has been talked about for a while now.
Mar 21, 2022 Interesting. Like I said, I'm willing to try it if the data is there, though I'm not 100% convinced it will work because there's so many factors that go into it that are hard to predict via a study. However I'd be pretty heated if they approved better pay for people making six digits before raising the federal min wage to...two digits. Also this sounds like it's specifically talking about attracting more moderate candidates—which I understand can make it easier to compromise and all, but I'm not convinced voting in more Joe Manchins will be all that helpful in getting anything remotely progressive done. I could be wrong though!
Mar 21, 2022 also random question @Enigma but are you interested into going into politics at all yourself?
Mar 21, 2022 The electorate is more moderate than you & I. People that are more ideological or farther along the ideological spectrum (either left or right) tend to be those who are more well-educated & well off. So if we want a Congress that’s more responsive/representative of the public, that means more Joe Manchins have to be willing to run for office. Other research has suggested too that instead of a direct pay increase, we ought to fund housing for Congressmembers. There are dozens of Congressmembers that sleep in their office when Congress is in session because they simply cannot afford a second home in the expensive D.C. area. This creates problematic work environments for congressional staffers as well which are some times tasked with doing personal errands like laundry & dishes (I’m not kidding, this happens quite often) which obviously isn’t their job. I don’t think I would ever run for office. I like my privacy too much. Working in politics in some other capacity, maybe.
Mar 29, 2022 i feel like that grind would keep only the most dedicated willing to go through it though since they’re not in it just for the money
Mar 29, 2022 Nah they don't pay enough. Enigma would only be interested in a 2 million dollar annual wage minimum
Mar 29, 2022 It’s shown to do the opposite: if pay isn’t high enough to compensate for the high cost of being a Congressmember, the position will disproportionately attract more well off candidates who can not only afford to run for office (it costs a lot to run for office) but afford the likely pay cut that comes with it + high living expenses.
Mar 30, 2022 Maybe in the bubble that is the United States of China. But anyone with a brain knows that's its a s--- idea, don't care what the study says. Raising wages of people already on 6 figures a year? Lmfao, tax cuts for the wealthy too? - Just so they are less disgruntled, the chances of them performing a mass shooting goes down.
Mar 30, 2022 And what high living expenses do they have apart from travel (rarely international) and accommodation during said travel? It's not like congress members start a career in politics then need to buy gold chains and flash cars to fit the part. It's not a lavish lifestyle job lol.
Mar 30, 2022 No... here is math... You compared paying our Legislative Branch a little more money with tax cuts for the rich.... you know how much money the federal government has given Elon Musk over since 2004? Around $10,000,000,000.00 Do you know how much federal taxes he has paid in the last 5 years? $0.
