I have some catching up to do this year.

Regardless, this was written in the New York Times, "For the second year in a row, Oscar voters put forth an all-white field of acting nominees." Thoughts?

Absolutely true, and a real problem. They're more than comfortable to -- from their lofty liberal perches -- to feign interest in black stories when they're regulated to Documentary or Foreign Film, etc. But when they overlook the highly profitable STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON? Or snub Idris Elba? Or choose to honor Stallone over Jordan/Coogler? It reeks of institutional bias... inadvertent, as I'm sure personally they're all very very nice/well-intentioned. But c'mon.

Leo was great in The Revenant, but anyone else think his performance in WOWS was more deserving?

I know what he went through and he deserves all the credit in the world for it and by no means do I think he shouldn't be nominated, I just think WOWS was more impressive. I liked Hardy's performance in The Revenant more than Leo's tbh.

Straight Outta Compton was a terrible, terrible snub, but I can't say I'm surprised.

Different tastes obviously - But I think his acting in Revenant is way more convincing and harsh than WoWS, as far as my personal taste in movies, I would choose WoWS over Revenant in terms of entertainment. Both deserves an oscar tho, this time he'll get it.

I'd agree with more harsh, not so sure about more convincing. Leo looked like he was born to play Jordan Belfort. Agree to disagree I guess, but I'd definitely take 2+ hours of prime Leo over his performance in The Revenant. Either way I hope he finally brings one home.

I thought the Oscar nominations were boooooring.

    - Unlike the Golden Globes, they wrongly placed Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander in supporting actress, when they very clearly have lead roles (Mara has slightly more screentime than Blanchett, who was placed in lead). I know this thing happens from time to time, but this was a particularly egregious attempt to avoid the stiff competition in lead actress. If Mara wins though, I won't begrudge her her Oscar since she's still my favorite performance of the year.

    - Snubbing Kristen Stewart! I was hoping the critics would push her to a nomination like Marion Cotillard last year, but there was no luck, especially since there were really only 3 open spots due to the above. I like Rachel McAdams and she's good in Spotlight but she really didn't warrant a nomination.

    - Snubbing Carol from picture and Todd Haynes from director. Choosing Adam McKay for The Big Short and Lenny Abrahamson for Room over Haynes hurts the most.

    - Snubbing Michael B. Jordan in a year where Best Actor is so weak is not a good look for the Academy. I mean, I like Cranston but time has already forgotten Trumbo (Note: I have not nor will I ever see Trumbo).

    - Jennifer Lawrence for Joy...Given how strong the Actress category was this year, this nomination really stands out poorly. Lawrence is really good, but at this rate she's going to get more nominations than Streep.

Exactly...It's made all the more glaring by the fact that Creed, Straight Outta Compton and last year's Selma are precisely the sort of films that the Oscars nominate year-in and year-out in terms of their narratives and their overall accessibility. The only thing different about them is...well, you know.
