Aug 17, 2020 Loved the short story that’s what got me to watch the movie which I was shaky on but ended up really enjoying
Aug 17, 2020 @Donkey Kong Cuntry can u elaborate on the lighthouse? I love traditionak horror but also psychological / unsettling stuff (but not midsommar) Also @Judas Black same for it comes at night tbh
Aug 17, 2020 Hmmm, it's been a minute since I've seen it but I didn't get any of that from it personally. I thought all that stuff was just part of the cult, didn't feel random to me and I didn't really feel like it was trying to do anything super deep, just create an unsettling atmosphere. And I might be remembering wrong but I don't think the swedish guy needed to meet them specifically or even that was his sole purpose of studying in the states. And Cults are kinda long cons in general—that's how they get you. I mentioned this in another thread when talking to @Michael Myers about it, but what I liked about the movie is that it does such a great job of depicting a relationship that's on the outs—where you both know it's over but you haven't been able to admit it to yourselves yet. Watching the two main characters I could really feel that sense of dread in my gut, and it makes you (and them) unsure if the dread/anxiety they're feeling is from the relationship or because something weird is actually going on. I'll have to rewatch it to see if I notice any of the stuff you and MM talked about
Aug 17, 2020 Well, I would have said if you didn't like Midsommar you wouldn't like The Lighthouse because it's much more stylized and artsy in my opinion (ie you might feel like it's pretentious), but if @Slyk hated Midsommar and liked The Lighthouse, you might like it too. You could characterize The Lighthouse as a "psychological thriller," but imo that's a branch or offshoot of horror. It's made by the same guy who made The Witch if you saw that. Def more about feelings of dread/tension building than jumpscares throughout. btw I always wondered: for english movies do you watch in English with Dutch subtitles?
Aug 17, 2020 I'm getting old bro I knew exactly what you were talking about but for the life of me couldn't remember so I had to google it.... Bad Johnson
Aug 17, 2020 First of all, I mostly love psychological thrillers. Side effects is great, butterfly effect, the strangers... and other horror movies that creep u the f--- out without jump scares but just make u feel really uncomfortable. Like, Get Out was also different than ur typical haunted house movie or serial killer movie. So was It Follows and Autopsy of Jane Doe. Love all of them! So its very possible that I like The Lighthouse. Because w Midsommar its not so much the artsy stuff that makes me dislike it, but the fact that (imo) it had not that much more to offer. Like, the scene where they dropped that old dude it was pretty cool and unsettling, sure. But where she was going nuts, and where the guy was f---ing the redhead w all the old ladies moaning... I wanted to fast forward it not because it made me uncomfortable but because I was like wtf am I watching. But I guess my biggest issue was that all of the characters were dipshits and I didnt give a single f--- about them or their (almost non excisting) stories. So yeah the concept of a weird cult doing weird s--- is nice but I think they took it too far w the artsy stuff and added almost zero suspense or character development -aside from the fact that the whole movie was a metaphor for her life). Same w US have u seen it? Nice premise! A clone family stalking them and hunting them down. Nice. But the whole world below and weird a--- storyline w the wall and clones for everyone was confusing as f--- and also made u not care for the characters.. like I didnt even did except the lead -gorgeous and amazing actress btw- I always watch english language. In germany they always put german voices over it I f---ing hate that. Sometimes dutch subs, sometimes english and sometimes no subs. I can understand 90% but in some shows or movies (like Suits which is about law etc) its cool to have subs for some words I dont know. But I dont need them really.
Aug 17, 2020 Yeah I can't stand dubbed dialogue. Speaking of Germany though have you seen the show Dark (german show) on netflix? You might like it.
Aug 17, 2020 I think I walked out of that s--- in theaters. Found footage films are just the worst. Very few have done it right.
Aug 17, 2020 I agree. Shaky camera's not seeing s--- is annoying as f---. I get the appeal but its not for me.
Aug 18, 2020 Nope! But just looked on Netflix and seems pretty interesting so thanks for the heads up!
Aug 19, 2020 This was a pretty good watch, never heard of it before so I appreciate your suggestion of it Never heard of this either, checking it out now, pretty funny so far, also appreciate this suggestion being made... Edit: who was the poster that wrote it?
Aug 22, 2020 I’m way late on this but one of the more enjoyable movies I’ve watched of late was peanut butter falcon. I see you chose American pickle which I am still going back and forth on if I want to watch it.
Aug 22, 2020 It's worth seeing for sure, not a movie I would buy digitally to watch at any given time but it's definitely worth checking out once has some good laughs
